Laurie's POV
Our letters of acceptance were something to behold. We did apply for the college a while back in the year, but we had no reply and so we assumed that we didn't get in to it. But apparently we had! A day before college starts and they tell us now? Aldfrith and Liam went to the college that day and went to investigate what happened. While me and Rayegan sat in the living room sipping tea.
Rayegan set his mug down and turned to me.
"So Laurie," he began, "tell me about your family, I'm curious about the rest of them. I mean surely you have other members of the family." He rested his head on his hand and listened to my answer.
"Well I'm not very close with my family. Many of them are quite wealthy but they all have their own problems. There's my sassy Aunt Emily. I was invited once to her seventh husband's funeral, where which the social worker planned on having a word with her, but she did spot a rather charming photographer and she was off like Elizabeth Hurley galloping in her Gucci hooves," she was almost always a bachelorette, "There was my Uncle Albert, but he was a wild man, so he has basically done every drug in existence and cannot remember anything before the age of 37. So he's spending his days in his mum's attic, grumbling about how much methadone is, and how it's cheaper to buy crack." Rayegan's eyes grew wider and wider. "And of course who can forget my wacky cousin Felicity, she just cannot understand how if it wasn't a jackal the first time in pictionary, why it wouldn't be the next 10 times. And that the animal Mary rode to Bethlehem was not Kelly Mcgillis."
Rayegan giggled. "Yes that's all fine, but I wanted to know about... your... family." My smile turned into frown, a deep, serious, unforgettable frown. Rayegan began to think he shouldn't have said anything, but I sighed and placed my tea down on the table.
"Well Rayegan, I didn't have a father; he left apparently before I was born, so I spent all my life with only a motherly figure."
"So she had no new boyfriends?"
"No. After my father she didn't really trust relationships. We were extremely close, my mother and I, and we did almost everything together. Well one a day, my mother was invited to her school reunion for 25 years. That was where I very first met Liam; we didn't hit it off immediately, but my mum and his mum were very good friends, and so we met more and more and eventually became friends. When we started school together our bond became closer, as well as his mum. Anyway, when we were very young, our mothers went for a drive in the countryside. But the weather changed dramatically and it was far too dangerous on the roads. Oh they were dare-devils. And... well... they crashed horribly. Only my mother was found. Liam's mother still, technically, hasn't been found." Rayegan placed his hand on Laurie's. "Not long after that Liam wanted to leave and move away, but I..." I stammered, "I just couldn't take it. And Liam made up his mind to look after me etc."
Rayegan wiped away a tear from his chin and gave me a big hug. I kept hold of him. Rayegan could feel my tears on his shoulder, and the jerky movement of my chest as I abruptly sobbed. "Don't cry Laurie, it's all right," Rayegan rubbed my back, "it's all right."
Rayegan got a tissue out of the box and wiped away my tears. He smiled and hended my mug of tea. "I remember my Gandfather, he was a conductor in Auschwitz." He said. I could only stare at him in disgust.
"No he was a driver of the kids train at the zoo... you know it's a big place, there's other stuff there!"
