My head hurts, like it was getting hammered, I try stretching my arms, but my muscles seemed sore, almost protesting. I open my eyes to find Evan sitting on the other side of the cot with his head tilted backward, his breathing even which indicated that he was sleeping. How did we get back to our cabin?

I had a Band-Aid wrapped around my head. Getting up I head towards the washroom to freshen up, to wash away all the dirt and grime from the previous night. Just remembering the events of the night brought shivers down my spine, I knew we got lucky, as there was no way we would have defeated two giant wolfs.

After freshening up, I head towards the kitchen to find Evan already present, rummaging through the cabinets, preparing breakfast.

“Good morning. How are you feeling?” He asks me, after I take a seat on a chair beside the counter.

“Sore. My head hurts a little.” I answer him honestly.

“I never got to know how you got hurt so seriously?”  Evan inquires, a mixture of concern and curious, adorning his features.

“Got pushed by that wolf, fell down, hit my head on the ground” I tell him, between mouthful, concentrating on eating, rather the conversation.

A moment of silence follows, which prompts me to look up towards Evan.

He stood there, eyes closed, a pained expression on his face.

“How did you manage to get away from it?” he asks me, anguish written over his face. Did he care for me?

“I got lucky I guess. It got distracted, sniffing something in air so I snuck away from it.”

“I am so sorry. I was supposed to look after you” Evan says, coming towards me, taking my hands into his large ones, his expression somber.

“It’s okay Evan. This was not your fault. Everything happening to us is not our fault. It’s the fault of those who kidnapped us.” I say, gently, like talking to a child.

“But I am your soulmate.” he says, probing me to acknowledge this fact. I nod, looking away. Trying to divert his attention from the topic I ask him

“How did we get to the cabin last night?”

“After you fainted from the blood loss, I knew I had to get u back to the cabin. But leaving you there was not an option, so I carried you, but instead of going back to the forest, I headed past the lake to the other side, and fortunately I found the cabin just after ten minutes of walking.”

“Thank you for looking after me” I say with gratitude, giving him a small smile, our eyes lock, an unspoken promise pass between us that we would look after each other.

--

It was our last day in the cabin, or perhaps the last night, tomorrow will decide what fate has in store for us. The past five days have been a roller coaster of strange events and unidentified emotions.

There are times when I feel an undeniable attraction towards Evan, but there is this barrier which keeps preventing me from pursuing my feelings. I was in contradiction with myself, torn in two parts, both conflicting with each other. One not ready to let go of the past and one ready to embrace my future, Evan!

From past two days he has been taking care of me, like a true friend. Every little thing he does is bringing us closer, creating a start of a new relationship. Being in isolation gave me time to think, to decipher the path my life was going on. I had never felt this sort of comfort and the sense of belonging to someone, like I felt with Evan. I had been dwelling in the past for so long, but it was time now to concentrate the mind on present moment, because future might bring anything.
