My insides twisted in anxiety, as I stay rooted at the door. Fear possessing me in its hold.

Fear is a noxious thing, it will hold one captive if given power over oneself. It doesn't need door or windows, it originates from inside. Willing myself to calm down I take a deep breath, I refuse to being held captive by my own fears.

Clearing my wayward thoughts I head towards the master bedroom to check upon Jake.

"Jake" I call softly upon not finding him in the bedroom.

"In here" Heading towards the washroom, I find him fixing his tie.

"I am almost ready, and I even have few seconds to spare. See, you worry over nothing." He grins, turning he gives me a peck. A strong emotion engulfs me as I wrap my arms tightly around him.

"Love"

"Hmm"

"Let's ditch that dinner"

I look up to find Jake grinning childishly at me.

"You're unbelievable. We haven't met our folks for a long time now, they will be really disappointed if we don't show up J" I scold him playfully.

"Fine, But remember I am doing this only and only for you. Come let's get going"

"You go ahead, let me just grab my purse."

Turning I head towards the bedside table to grab my phone and purse. Not finding my cell I grab my purse and head outside to only stop on finding Jake standing in the hallway.

"J, I thought you were taking out the car. Let's go."

"Love, why did you open the basement door?"

"What? I did not."

I step forward to find the door to our basement wide open.

"J. How? I remember clearly the door was closed."

"Love, I want you to go back inside the room and close the door." Jake orders, his voice tense just like his posture. His hands were balled into a fist, I had never seen him this tense, well except for the time when I told him about Tristan stalking me.

"Why? Let's just go to the dinner J." I plead. Sighing, Jake takes my hand into his large ones.

"Emily, I think I heard some voices from down there" He says, pointing towards the basement. "Maybe I am just being paranoid, but let me just check it for the peace of my mind."

"What?" I asked shocked. Remembering earlier incident I add "J, there was no one at the door earlier when someone rang the doorbell"

A loud bang pierces the silent night, the light overhead flickers before plunging us into overwhelming darkness.

"J.." I whisper softly, trying to find him in the dark.

A hand grasp mine from behind, a loud gasp escapes me, my heart trying to come out from my throat.

"Shh it's me. I think I saw a silhouette on the steps of the basement." Jake whispers from behind me. "Go inside the bedroom and call 911."

"Jake, I don't have my phone with me"

"Shit. Me neither"

There's a moment of complete silence as we contemplate our next step.
