as midnight approached, the three friends sat huddled up on the sofa in their pyjamas talking through the events of the day. since they had arrived back at sarah's house 2 hours ago, they had done nothing but talk and open up to each other, expressing their feelings and taking comfort in one another.
across the room, drew sat and listened, giving half a smile as he observing the three people who he loved dearly taking the first steps to helping one another heal. a sad realisation washed over him as he realised that they would be just fine without him and they did not need him there anymore. he took a deep breath and closed his eyes as he thought to himself "it's almost time to go drew, it's time to say goodbye for good"
after a while, shane let out a yawn and stood up, stretching
"I think I'll go to bed now" he spoke quietly but with a glimmer of a smile on his face "it's been a long day"
"all right" Luke replied smiling softly as he rose from the chair and wrapped his arms around his best friend "remember we're going to Norwich for the day tomorrow so try and get some rest okay?"
"I'll try" shane replied with a slight smile as he rubbed his eyes before wishing them a final goodnight and climbing the stairs to his bedroom.
Luke and Lucy huddled together and remained silent for a short while until finally 15 minutes later, Luke let out a sigh, sitting up and looking Lucy in the eyes as he opened his mouth to speak
"I'm sorry I didn't believe you" he whispered sincerely "I'm sorry I didn't listen to you when you told me. I just... I didn't know what to believe. I just..."
"it's okay" Lucy interrupted with a sigh "I guess it isn't an easy thing to believe and I didn't exactly choose the best time to tell you but.....I promise luke, I wasn't lying and I'm not going crazy...."
"I know" Lucy muttered quietly as he closed his eyes and remembered "I know because I saw him too. when kier and shane and laurence were hugging me, I saw him there beside you as if he had been there all along"
"he had" Lucy smiled softly as she reached up and stroked Luke's hair softly to comfort him "he's been here all along watching over you all"
"i.is he here now?" Luke asked hesitantly as Lucy looked up and over to the corner where drew was sat before turning back to Luke and nodding. Luke looked around the room. although he could no longer see him, just knowing he was there filled him with great comfort as he spoke aloud to the invisible being in the room
"I love you drew"
Lucy smiled as she listened to drew's response before whispering back to Luke
"he says he loves you too, pillnahn"
Luke took a moment to smile before his face filled with sadness and he asked
"w.what is it like drew? what does it feel like to be a ghost?"
before drew had a chance to reply, Lucy interuped
"I asked him the same thing" she whispered sorrowfully "he told me it was like constantly being in a lucid dream. like he can feel himself breathing but he isn't and like his heart is beating but it isn't. he said he can't feel any physical pain anymore but his emotional pain remains and he feels so helpless watching us all suffer but not being able to do anything about it. he also told me he saw a white light when he first passed away but he ran away from it because he needed to know kier was all right"
something clicked in Luke's head as he remembered that night in the hospital. his mouth dropped open as the words fell out
"that day. that day you died. kier's heart stopped beating and when they revived him he was shouting your name... he saw you didn't he?"
