Her eyed widened with shock, "n-no, he was just in the hospital today, I made sure of it!" I shook my head with dour, "I tried to check in on him... He wasn't there."
Mark's mother's face was stolid and seemed almost luminous in the sunlight peaking through the glass panes. "Where might he be?" I muttered softly, trying to bring a sense of calmness to the already frantic situation.
Her eyes widened as if she had just seen a set of blinking headlights, "Our old storage area, Frank had bought it a few years back and we always kept it for storage..." I nodded slowly, assuming Frank as Mark's abusive father.
-----------------------------------------
Mark's mother had given me directions to the storage area. She had begged to come help but I refused for safety reasons.
The building was long and rectangular, and it seemed about medium size. My legs slowly carried me to the large metal door, rust hung on to the handle as the sun created a harsh glare against the door.
Slowly, I turned the door handle and that's when I heard it. Cursing, yelling... hitting.
The door squeaked loudly as I pulled it open which caught Mark's attention. He looked as if he was in all kinds of pain and I could almost feel the throbbing myself. Mark's father paid no attention to my existence and continued hitting Mark.
That's when I snapped, there was no way I would let some loser like Frank Thomas hurt my best friend, "FUCK OFF" I screamed, loud enough to finally catch the old mans attention. Rage glowed in his eyes, he appeared almost ravenous.
"YOU DON'T DESERVE MARK AS YOUR SON!" I screamed, pulling out my phone and quickly dialing 911. A malicious smile spread across Franks face, "little girl, do you know what you're dealing with?" He voiced calmly. I stared in fear but he never came to hurt me.
I told the police my location, still wary of the old man staring at me. after giving all my information, I hung up. That's when Frank began to move towards me. Slowly, he pulled something black out of his back pocket. Mark's eyes widened in obvious pain as I began to see the black shotgun in his shaky hand, I froze, unable to move I was going to die.
Rough hands caressed the side of my face as Frank got closer, pointing the gun to my head, "Oh, darling what a mistake you've made."
I shook in fear but managed to reply, "M-Mark isn't a t-toy, he's a person, a-and more than that, he's your son. No one will remember your name and if they d-do, it'll be as someone who murdered two c-children because he couldn't handle h-his own life." A tear ran down Franks face as he cocked the gun. A gulp overtook me and I saw Mark struggling to stand and muster out any kind of word.
My eyes shut tight as I clenched in fear. That's when I heard it, a gunshot sounded across the room but, I wasn't dead, I wasn't even in pain. My eyes slowly opened as I saw Frank on the ground. Mark fell to the ground and began sobbing as I realized Frank had taken his own life instead of mine.
