Monstrous (Avengers Fanfic)

Chapter 16

Lila took a deep breath before opening the door. Oh how she hoped he would understand.

The door swished as it slid open, and she saw him, sitting in the middle of the floor, cross legged and eyes closed, with an almost peaceful look on his face. Lila gulped.

"Loki?" She called hesitantly.

His eyes shot open. Loki was up and at the edge of the glass before she could blink; it was a feat for someone to outpace her heightened senses.

Lila almost wanted to take a step back at the predatory grin he gave her.

His voice was deeper than before with an edge to it that she did not like. "Yes my dear?"

"I'm sorry that I took so long to come back, but I found out something wonderful."

Loki's unsettling grin morphed into a sneer but a second later. "Oh? And what could be so wonderful that you would simply abandon me? Me who is better than all of those puny mortals."

She didn't know whether to be hurt or angry. One of those 'puny mortals' was her brother.

Lila glared defiantly into Loki's eyes. "Well I suppose that Mr Better-than-everybody-else is so uninterested in said puny mortals, that he doesn't want to know what I have to say, or even why I came back!"

The moment the words left her mouth, she regretted them. Hurt flashed in his eyes before it was quickly engulfed with anger. But in all of that he did not answer her, he simply stared.

Uncomfortable at the way his eyes bored a hole in to her very being, Lila sat on the ground before the cell, and fidgeted with her claws.

Why was he being like this? He wasn't like this before!

She sat for a while before a damning thought struck her and she broke the silence.

As she looked up at Loki, he was surprised to see that her eyes were blue. "I'm sorry. You're lashing out at me because I hurt you by leaving and taking a long time to come back. You thought that I was going to be just like everyone else and leave you. But I promise I wont."

The surprise and happiness in Loki's eyes cemented her decision.

"Kurt could you please come here?" The question was asked to mid-air, but to Loki's surprise a blue skinned mutant poofed in next to Lila, before she leaned in and whispered in his ear.

Before Loki could even gather up the presence of mind to become jealous, Kurt reached out and grabbed Lila's wrist, and they both disappeared and reappeared next to him inside the cell.

Lila walked up to stand in front of Loki, looking up into his eyes, and seeing confusion and hope, smiled at him.

Gently she took his hand and sliced his palm with her claw. Dumbstruck, Loki just stood and watched while she concentrated on heating up the blood in her hand until all of the blood in her hand had been cleansed of the petrification toxin, then she sliced her palm and joined their hands together, reciting the words that had lay in her heart since she had met him.

"I give you my word as Lilanne Endora Cecilia Rosanna that I will stay by your side and defend you  against any and all foes we might face. May my word be my life. Together we stand and together we fall."

Her words hung heavy in the air, and no-one said anything as Loki stood placidly staring at her as she licked her palm and then his, her saliva spreading her healing ability to him temporarily.

Her eyes were alight with happiness at the promise that she had made, and at the joy she could feel coming of Loki through their new, barely perceivable bond.

But joy was not the only thing that lit her eyes. As she looked up into Loki's eyes, he stared back down into swirling pools of molten gold.
