CHAPTER 6
The strange man that I felt drawn to smiled up at me and reached out his hand. I cautiously flew down and landed on it, now wanting to give away my secret just yet.
"Shane come on I thought you were going to help, stop messing with birds." I tilted my head at him. So his name was Shane?
"I am helping; I have solved your little problem already." Shane held out the hand that I was standing on and I studiously turned away. There was no way I was going to face Jayden after what happened. That jerk can go fall off a cliff. I felt safe with the blond man so I stayed where I was.
"Dude that’s a bird with an attitude clearly not who we are looking for. Last I checked Evie was human and going in the other direction." he sighed then continued, "I don't know what kind of game you are playing at but when you actually find something useful you can come and get me."
I turned and saw Jayden walking in the other direction and I decided to experiment with my newfound abilities. I flew off of Shane’s hand and landed on a nearby branch that would surely hold my human weight. I became a girl again and called out to him.
"Jayden, where are you going?" I asked, and before he turned I shifted into an owl, staying perched on the branch.
"What the-" he said then turned to stare at Shane. Shane of course had seen me shift and was staring up at me incredulously. "Did you do that?" Jayden demanded getting angry. When Shane didn’t respond he looked up at me but didn’t seem to find anything wrong.
"Of course not" Shane finally said. His confusion was slowly turning into understanding but my motives were still obviously unclear to him.
"Look, I’m not playing you need to cut it out" while they were distracted I zipped to the edge of the clearing and shifted into a deer. I called out to the other deer in the forest and one by one they appeared next to me as the guys continued fighting.
I told the deer to simply dash through the clearing and they did exactly that. They darted over and around the guys and they yelled out in surprise. Okay so now they are confused but what is something that will really freak them out?
I turned into a red fox and darted out at them. Jayden turned to protect himself and I jumped out of the way, landing in a crouch. A slow hiss escaped me and when Shane tried to step closer I snapped at him.
Jayden glanced at Shane then back down to me. "That isn't you, right?" he asked and Shane merely shook his head. I kept my eyes locked on Shane's not letting Jayden see their purple color and as soon as Jayden stepped forward I zipped around him and back into the woods.
“Does the forest just want to kill us today?” I heard Jayden ask.
“No, I think it just wants to kill you.”
“Look if this turns out to be one of your stupid mind tricks then I swear I will kill you.”
“As funny as that would be,” Shane said, “I had no part in this. I am just as confused as you are.”
I again shifted, this time getting more creative and becoming a wolf. I already know from my little hunting trip before that my wolf was white, and not gonna lie, it looks pretty dang sexy. As I stepped out into the clearing again from another location, both men whipped around to face me and looked taken aback by my appearance.
"Holy-" Shane began before Jayden quickly cut him off.
"What the hell is going on here?!" I then turned and growled menacingly at him and I saw him flinch. I looked straight into his eyes and I watched as recognition dawned in his eyes. "Evie?"
