CHAPTER 3

~*Evie*~

I woke up to the feel of sun on my face, and the soft sound of a trickling creek. For a moment I just laid there in the grass feeling confused. Was I outside? And more importantly, where the hell am I? Slowly, I pulled myself into a sitting position and pried open my eyes.

"W-where am I?" I managed to say as I looked around. I was surrounded by trees on every side and I was sitting on a soft patch of grass in the same clothes I put on this morning. "Why am I in the woods" I asked to no one in particular.

I heard someone laugh and I whipped my head around to face the noise. It was Jayden, and then it all hit me. He thought I was Nikki and he wanted to bring me to... some queen chick? Jayden laughed again and motioned to the fire, "Hungry?" he asked.

I quickly hopped to my feet and crouched into a defensive position. Thanks god the school decided to do a self-defense in P.E. last year. I might be in the middle of no-where but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to try and escape. When it was obvious that he wasn’t going to attack me I turned tail and ran.

My thoughts were going haywire. This makes no sense! Things like this are only supposed to happen in books! I have always dreamed of being in a fantasy and getting to live through the weirdest things but now that it was all happening to me I realize how dead wrong I was. This was not fun or exciting, this was scary. I was just kidnapped by a random stranger who somehow knows who my sister is.

I sprinted in and around the trees. Luckily I have been training for soccer and I can run for a pretty long time, but eventually I am going to get tired and need to stop. I have no idea where I am. It looks like the woods from home but everything is much more vibrant. It’s like someone found the brightness setting and turned it up a notch or two.

Trees whipped past my face and I could hear someone yelling from behind me. I sped up and zipped around the trees. I ran into a clearing and ran straight into something, and that something was crazy big. I fell back onto my butt with an oomph and glanced up at what I hit. I looked up into the eyes of a wolf, not just any wolf, a really, really big wolf.

He was leaning down to look at me but it would easily be a foot taller than me if I was standing. Its fur was a light grey color with streaks of black and brown running through it. A low growl came from its throat, and I flinched back a little. It wasn't a threatening growl, it was curious. It seemed that this wolf had no intention of hurting me, but I wasn’t taking and chances.

"Nikki!" of course Jayden would follow me, and I really needed to tell him to stop calling me Nikki. The wolf looked up and growled again, this time it wasn’t directed at me. I turned, still sitting, and looked at Jayden with big eyes. He seemed just as surprised as I was and tried talking again, "Nikki, you have to come over to me, slowly."

I stood and the wolf just glanced at me. I slowly started backing away and it whimpered. What? Now it was sad? It was as if he didn't want me to leave. I kept backing up until suddenly I felt someone wrap their arms around my waist.

I let out a little squeak of fear but then I heard Jayden’s voice, "Are you ok?" I watched as the wolf backed away slowly, similar to the way I had, and then he turned and dashed into the trees.

"Are you ok?" Jayden asked again. I just sat there looking at the spot where the wolf had disappeared. Could that have been a werewolf? Was my life so turned around that everything mystical was suddenly real?

"Nikki-" he sounded really worried now, so I cut him off, "What was that?" I asked my voice shaking.

"That was just a normal wolf; I don't know why it was acting so weird." He replied, glancing in the direction the wolf had gone. “We are lucky we aren’t in werewolf territory or that could have gotten ugly.”

"Where are we?" I asked looking around again and seeing nothing but green. The trees were covered in a moss that practically glowed and even the ground felt spongy under my feet. I looked up to the tree tops and saw birds flitting around playfully. I could even hear a creek nearby, as if the scene wasn't perfect enough. I had a sudden feeling of familiarity, this felt right, as if this was where I belonged. “And did you just say werewolf?” I asked in disbelief.

"This is the Never" he said as if that explained everything, “And yes werewolves are very much real and very territorial.”

I looked up at him and he must have seen how confused I looked, "the Never is a reality that resides next to the one you live in. it is made up of all the mythical creatures, good and bad, that humans have thought up over the years." Now I was really stunned. I was suddenly glad that he was still holding my waist from before.

"So you are saying that all the fantasy stuff like vampires and faeries are all real?" I felt sick. I always thought that hearing this would be amazing, like I would just accept it and everything would be normal, just like in books.

"Yes" he said hesitantly, probably feeling how weak I was.

For the second time today I felt the blackness overtaking me and this time I gave in, going limp in Jayden's arms

Nikki went limp in my arms. I scooped her up and started running back to the camp I had built just a little while ago. Maybe this whole explaining thing was going to be harder than I thought.

Lady Trianna had told me that Nikki wouldn't understand our world, that she was never taught, but I was still worried. I really hope she doesn't keep up with this fainting problem, I thought with a wry smile.

I reached the camp, put out the fire and grabbed my bow. We need to get moving before it gets dark. I scooped Nikki back into my arms and couldn't help but admire her flawlessly soft skin.

I ran off in the direction of the palace. Being a Hunter makes everything is easier. We are built to be the perfect human, I can run faster than most of my prey, I have what some would call super strength, and my senses are almost as good as the other animals of the forest. I am the perfect predator. I find my enemy and go through with the orders given to me.

We are trained starting at the age of three to be the best there is. Hunters are fiercely loyal to those that they serve and it is almost considered a sin to commit treason. You will be shunned by all others like you.

Now I just need to finish this job and get this dang girl out of my head.
