CHAPTER 10
~*Evie*~
When I woke up my head hurt like mess. Pain throbbed behind my eyes, stabbing through my brain. I tried opening my eyes but immediately snapped them shut as the glare from a nearby window hit them. I moaned a little and tried to roll onto my side. My body hit the sheets and I immediately gasped out in pain as soon as I moved. My entire body felt like it was on fire. I could feel each cut on my body and all of them flared to feel a thousand times worse.
“Oh my gosh, Evie are you ok?” I could tell it was Shane. How is it that in only a few days I could already point out his voice?
I tried to open my eyes again and I winced a little when I saw the light. Shane noticed and rushed over to close the blinds. When I opened my mouth to talk all that came out was air because my throat is dryer than the Sahara. Shane being attentive again got me the glass of water that was sitting on the nightstand.
“Are you ok? How do you feel?” he asked. His hands were clenched at his sides as if he didn’t know what to do with them.
“I feel like I was run over by a bulldozer then jumped on by a very hyperactive kangaroo.” He chuckled a little bit, a sound that sent thrills through my stomach.
“That is just the after effect of the healing, you are going to feel pretty bad for the next hour or so but afterwards you will be good as new.” I thought back to what happened. My sister is a shifter, and she knew all of this beforehand. How could she keep this a secret from me? She knows how my life is, every day I would sit and read and get lost in fantasy and this entire time she was here, living it up in the world of make-believe.
That was the part that bothered me the most. Why would she keep this a secret? I know we don’t always get along but we are sisters right? She is entitled to show some form of love towards me. Now that I think about it, I can’t even remember that last time she ever did anything nice for me. All this time, my own sister has been using me and lying to me, and I went along with it thinking everything was perfectly normal.
I started to freak out a little bit. My entire upbringing was a lie. My sister hates my guts and I am actually a mythical creature who lives in a different dimension. Shane was looking at me funny and I just closed my eyes. Why does he even care? So what if he is my soulmate? It’s not like that is actually real. I refuse to be dragged any further into this mess than I already am.
A traitor tear slipped down my face and Shane immediately noticed. “Does it hurt? Is there anything I can do?” I reopened my eyes and saw his ice blue ones staring back at me with worry.
“Do you mind leaving? I just need some time to think.” Hurt flashed across his face but he turned and walked out of the room. I closed my eyes and soon I was asleep again.
When I woke up a second time my body felt loads better. I was still sore but otherwise there was no trace of the burning agony I felt before. Shane was nowhere in sight. The pull I felt let me know he was in a room very close to mine.
I slowly stepped out of bed and made my way to the bathroom. When I looked in the mirror I could barely recognize myself. I had dark bags under my eyes and my skin was pale. My hair was a rat’s nest and I was still wearing the blood covered shifter outfit.
I went to the bathroom and washed my face, pulling my fingers through my hair. It wasn’t great but it would work. Next I stepped out onto the balcony. It was two stories up and faced the secret garden where I had faced Nikki… How long ago? I don’t even know what day it is. I could see the bushes that we had crushed and the entire area looked like a mess. I guess no one has bothered to clean it up yet.
I stood up on the railing and jumped off, shifting into my comfortable blue jay form in mid-air. I Flapped upwards and relished the feeling of sun on my wings. I saw a group of birds nearby and flew over to investigate. They were all different colors and they flapped lazily around the court yard. I joined them and simply enjoyed the feeling of unity.
I watched as the grounds of the palace flew by underneath us. It was a breathtaking sight. People looked like Barbie dolls and the flowers shone brighter than they ever did when I was human.
Taking a lap around the garden I landed on a windowsill of a random room and peeked inside. Who knew this stuff could be helpful for spying on people? Inside the room was a couple obviously getting a little bit heated. I was about to fly off until I hear a familiar voice.
A closer look confirmed my suspicions. Lady Trianna was sitting on a bed in only a bra making out with one of the guards that had been in the courtyard with her. I let out a short twittering laugh. Who knew the leader of this society was actually a scandal?
I took to the air again and let the wind push me up higher into the clouds.
Suddenly I was panicked. All the birds around me picked up on my emotion and scattered, leaving me flapping alone through the air. I took me a moment to recognize the emotion. It wasn’t me who was feeling panicked, It was Shane. When did that happen? Next thing you know he is going to be reading my thoughts. I swooped back to the balcony of my room and just settled there, looking through the window.
Shane was pacing back and forth across the room frantically. Other birds joined me on the railing, just sitting and watching. I guess I’m like a role model in the animal world. All of the others started twittering at each other and Shane turned and glanced out the open door. He watched us sitting there and managed to catch my eyes. Recognition dawned in his face and he slowly walked out onto the balcony.
The other birds took off but I stayed, looking up at him warily.
“Evie, could you shift back?” I did. It was an involuntary reflex and a second later Shane pulled me to his chest and buried his face in my hair. “I was so worried.” He mumbled and I just stood there and let him hug me.
The door to my room flew open with a bang and we jumped apart. Standing there was a very pissed off looking Jayden.
“Evie look we really need to talk.” He said and before I could respond Shane cut me off.
“Look would you just leave her alone? It’s obvious to everyone that she doesn’t want to talk to you.”
“This isn’t any of your business Shane,” He said with a glare, “Please Evie, just hear me out.”
“I have nothing to say to you Jayden.” I snapped at him, letting the venom leak into my voice.
“Look I am really, really sorry. It was wrong for me to kiss you like that, I know and I’m sorry. Also I shouldn’t have shot you with that dart. It was wrong of me to force you to go anywhere and I was just desperate.” By the end he put on a puppy dog face. “If you would please forgive me? I feel really bad about what happened and I just want things to be ok between us.”
“Jayden, I get what you are saying but what I don’t get is why it matters so much? Why can’t you just leave me alone?”
“I don’t know, just please I feel really bad about what happened and I just want to be ok.” I glanced at Shane who was still glaring at Jayden before I responded.
“Promise never to do it again?”
“Yes of course! I feel really bad about everything.”
“Well then I guess I can forgive you.” Jayden ran forward and hugged me, a huge smile stretching across his face.
“Don’t worry; I will be the best friend a girl could have.” I couldn’t help but laugh. He pulled back and looked me in the eyes. “I promise I won’t let you down.”
