Making It Big Time

Chapter 4

As the three girls chomped down their food, Max complained to his sister. He didn’t get why she wouldn’t try out for his movie. Well, it wasn’t exactly his, but he was the producer so he got some credit. He didn’t want Kasey to be the lead. That girl had no talent at all, and his opinion was shared by everyone. Unfortunately, she convinced people in bed easily.

“Don’t make me be tortured with spending even more time with Kasey,” He pleaded.

Marina giggled. “She give you too much last night?”

“Don’t stray from the subject,” He sighed. “You deserve the part so much more.”

“So, I don’t wanna,” She childishly replied.

Mimi jumped off the bar stool and walked to the other side of the island. Scooping some pancakes from the grill, she looked up at the two siblings arguing. “Marina, you are going to do it whether or not you want to. I will physically force you to do it.”

Marina glared at her so called best friend. She knew that her friends wanted her to act in front of crowds and share her talent. Once, she wanted that too. But, not any more.  After she acted for him years ago, she gave up hope. Stupid camera men just didn’t know how to give support correctly. She shivered at the thought.

“How about I try out for a smaller character,” She tried to compromise.

But neither Max nor her two friends allowed it. “Nope, you are going to be a star, Marina

               “But, I don’t wanna.”

“Stop acting so childish,” Rachel chided. “You can’t hide forever, and I will tie you in chains for the audition if I have to.”

Marina sighed. There was no way to win between both of her friends. They were too damn stubborn when all three of them sided together. It was unfair, but she wouldn’t hear the end of it if she just sat around. Anyways, it was only a movie. It wasn’t like there was going to be a whole bunch of people in an audience. Also, it probably wouldn’t be that popular in the end.

                “Fine,” She gave in.

Rachel and Mimi gave each other a high five, while Max moved his arm in a yes like fashion. Marina watched, amused at the trio. It was a good thing that she barely acknowledged Darren, the camera man, any more, or the movie experience would have been a lot worse and terrible. After a clear of her throat, she had the other three’s attention once more.

“Does this mean I don’t have to do any more plays?” She asked.

The glare from all three gave her the answer that she needed. Groaning, she sat up. She knew that she was lucky, however. Not many people had great friends that encouraged them to do what they loved most and forced them to do it so that she received the best from her life. For that she was deeply grateful and wouldn’t change no matter what.

Throughout the next week, Kasey made a point to threaten her from the audition, but Marina and her friends stood their ground firmly. Kasey may be intimidating, but the support of Rachel and Mimi kept her on her feet. Even though there was a chance she wouldn’t make it, her confidence was boosted when Kasey took her as a threat. Now, it was also a fight to prove that she was better in talent than her rival.

However, Friday, the day of the auditions, butterflies fluttered around in her stomach. Suddenly, it seemed that not doing the play was a fantastic idea. Trudging, she delayed as much time to go there as possible. Darren and her still hadn’t communicated so her nerves were even worse.

“I don’t think that this is such a great idea anymore,” Marina struggled.

Rachel and Mimi were dragging her towards the auditorium. They both knew that her stage fright was getting to her, but they were not letting her back down. Not only was she great, but Kasey would also tease her relentlessly for stepping down. Marina was not going through that.

“You don’t want to be mercilessly teased for the rest of your high school years, do you?” Mimi encouraged.

“I don’t care; I don’t want to go in there.” Marina dug her heels to the ground; however, it did not stop her two friends from continuing to pull her into the auditorium.

Finally, they managed to push her in. The commotion they made caused everybody to turn in their direction including Darren. Marina blushed heavily under the attention while Rachel took control over the situation. Like she always did.

“Let’s get this show on the road! Chop, chop,” She commanded, clapping her hands together.

The crew started to to work quickly, not wanting to face Rachel’s wrath. Assistants pulled out paper to take the notes that the director shouted out. Stage hands moved back and forth across the stage, placing props around it. Darren took a long glance at Marina, who cringed when he looked at her, before setting up his camera to tape for future reference.

Mimi burst into a fit of giggles when the director came up from behind Rachel to tap her on the shoulder. He didn’t look happy at all to see her taking over his position. Although he normally was a light-hearted person, he took his hobby to heart. Anger seeped his face.

“I suggest you go sit in a chair while I do my job,” He fumed.

“Oh, didn’t see you there, Ty. I think I’ll just go over there and observe,” She flinched as she turned around to face him.

                “Good plan.”

After that, Ty commenced auditions. He started with the smaller, supporting roles and worked his way up the list. Marina had to admit that some of them were pretty good, but the rest were dressed up chicks in skimpy outfits trying to gain attention. She hated when people did something that they didn’t truly love. Life was too short to waste it.

When it was Kayla’s turn, Marina winced constantly. Her high pitched scream and constant horrific acting were evident enough that some of her minions were giving secret contorted faces at the performance. When she finished, she fluttered a flirty wink at Ty who seemed oblivious to the effort that she was making.

“Next up, Marina Ryan,” Ty announced.

Butterflies fluttered once again, and sweat broke out on her eyebrows. She didn’t think that she could do this. Sure, she loved it, but Darren and Kasey both out there were just too much for her stage fright. She was about to make a run for it when Mimi suddenly came out from behind her and pushed her out on stage.

                      “Go,” Mimi whispered.

Marina nodded. Here it goes, she told herself. She ignored the people that watched her intently or Darren, who gazed at her from his position. Thoughts and threats from Kasey left her brain. She was completely empty, and there was nothing to worry her. With a quick glance in her memory, she mentally pulled out the script from the play that she had written earlier.

She took a deep breath and began words that captivated her audience.
