Sam looked at Toby expectantly. Toby was still uncertain. He had a dull yellow running through out his veins, but his eyes shined as yellow was the sun.
'Satisfaction' Sam's mind reminded. 'But still uncertain'
Suddenly there was a bark from somewhere down stairs, followed by 3 more.
"Shit. Um. Toby?" Sam looked at Toby and for the first time that night, he looked scared. Scared to ask of something and terrified of the answer.
"What's wrong Samuel? Is there a problem?" Toby asked. He was worried about Samuel.
'Who wouldn't be. This guy has just agreed to go to someplace he's never been to live with some guy he met an hour ago.' His mind tried to reason with him.
"No. It's just. I- my family- we- " Sam sighed. "We have 4 dogs, however; one of them is mine. I bought it with my own money and everything. Do you think I would take it?" Sam explained. He sounded tired and nervous.
"How big is it?" Toby asked. He knew animal over 35 pounds were prohibited, but maybe it could let it slide for now.
"He's a Australian Cattle. He weights 37 pounds and comes up to about here" Sam said motioning towards his lower thigh.
"He's 3 years old. I got him when he was just a pup. Toby, I can't leave him." Sam looked sad now. Toby knew he could be breaking a few rules with this dog. But something in Sam's eyes, the way he begged, to take this dog. It was like they had saved each other. There was no way he could say no.
"Well, we have to go out your front door anyways, so where's the doggy. We'll grab him on the way I out." Sam jumped up. He didn't waste a beat before he was grabbing his bag and rushing down the stairs. "You coming or what?" Sam hollered over his shoulder. Toby followed behind. He was quick, but Sam had the advantage, he knew the grounds. He knew where the turns were and the stairs. Even with this slight disadvantage, Toby still managed to stay neck and neck with Samuel.
When they got to the kitchen, Sam turned to him and smiled. It was a smile that reached all the way up into his eyes and Toby couldn't avoid the smile that appeared on his face too.
"Toby. I would like you to meet my puppy." Sam said as he opened the back door just a crack. A dog ran in and jumped on Sam.
"Hey. Hey. Hey buddy. How are you? Toby, this is Killer. Killer. That's Toby. It's okay. He's nice" Sam was talking to his dog as if it was a real human right there with them. Sam clipped on his leash and handed it to Toby.
"Hold this please. I'm gonna grab his food and toys. Be back in 2 minutes flat." Sam ran off leaving Toby with the dog. Toby knelt next to the dog. He had never had a pet but had always wanted one. Toby put his hand out as a jester for the dog. Killer sniffed it and then decided he was safe, he jumped on him and started to lick him completely. When Sam returned, all he saw was Killer in Toby's lap giving him kisses. Toby was shinning bright yellow.
"Good to see y'all are having fun together. Now let's get a move on."
