"So I heard you found your Cinderella." Romaine said as he join him at the booth.
"I really got to know your source before I die. It seems him or her really enjoy digging into other peoples lives." Lavanjah said, sipping his orange Juice.
"Sorry, No can do bro."he chuckled calling over a waiter.
"So did you kiss and make her your woman?" Romaine asked, as the waiter arrived.
"I'll have what he is having with a cold root beer." he ordered and the waiter took his order and went away.
"Not really, She's one hard feisty woman." he answered.
"You always had a thing for the fierce and feisty ones. Unlike me I like them innocent and damsel in distress." he chuckled.
" Yeah, that's why they never last. You save them and then they run off to mommy when you scar them with infidelity." he said swallowing his food.
"I like the feeling of being superman." he said as the waiter brought back his order.
"Like what happen with Leigh." he mumbled aloud.
"We do not talk about Leigh." he snap sternly. It was obvious he likes her more than just a friend. They have some pleasurable moment that neither want to talk about. She was the only woman who knows how to handle him with all his pickup lines, unattractive flirty ness.
"So what's the plan to woe this woman. I am dying to meet her. I need to see the beauty that got you all boring and acting like a married man." Romaine said with a smirk.
"I don't do marriage plus I am not boring. I am just occupied." he said wiping his greasy mouth.
"Whatever you say bro." Romaine said sipping his cold beer. "I really hope your not missing my gallery open to mess around in the sheet with your Cinderella or anyone for that matter." he threaten sternly starring at his best friend.
"I wouldn't miss it for the world." he said to his best buddy. After a few more drinks they head out in there separate direction.
Just as he enter his apartment the telephone rang. He swiftly shut the door and walked over the sofa and pick up the Burgundy receiver.
“Hello,” he answered.
“Where have you been? I have been calling for hours.” His concern adoptive mother voice sounded on the line.
“Sorry Mom, I was out.” he simply reply, loosen his tie.
“And your cellphone?” she asked as sit on the sofa as he realized a a familiar envelope on the centre table.
“Battery died.” he answered.
“Sometimes I wonder, why you even have a phone.” she stated as he listen to her shuffle around on the line.
“Because Mom, You wouldn't last without even hearing me for a day.” he sat down and pick up the envelope.
“I call to remind you about the Little Warriors Charity banquet. I would ask Molly but she's on vacation and we need to show up. ” she said. He turn over to see the ‘Hey Bro,” handwritten on the yellow envelope.
He held the envelope on his leg while he held the phone to his ears. “Yes Mom I remember, I was just looking for the perfect date for the night.” he lied. He really didn't remember, he was hoping that somehow she wouldn't remember.
“How about Kat Durance, she's perfect with kids Molly told me. Plus she might do something that will have the head boss smiling at us.” his mother suggested.
“That would be perfect.”he smiled mischievously to himself.
“Lavanjah this isn't a date, its business.” his mother stated sternly. “Yes Mom.” he said rolling his eyes, if she was here she would slap at the back of his and mumbled don't roll those eyes at me boy.
“I will call and notify Ms. Durance.” she said afterward.
“I will do it Mom, I can handle your employees.” he said.
“It not that. Kat is ....” she stop to figure out the right words to describe his Cinderella.
“Blunt and very Aggressive. I don't want to ruin our reputation because she spill something that wasn't meant to be said in such a poise atmosphere.” she said as he lean back in the sofa.
“I'll handle Kat, just relax and enjoy your Vacation. I am sure Dad is pining for your attention now.” he said as he heard a door shut.
“No he's not!” she squeak.
“Love you Mom!” he said and hang up the phone. He stare down at the envelope and reach into his pocket to pull out Detective Hines card. He turn it over to see his personal number scribble on the back. He told him to call if he ever received another note. It been a year and half since he last got one.
He swear he didn't want to get dragged back into that mess.
It was a hoping fantasy that went haywire into a rapid disaster that almost cost him and his parents life. He just wish there was way his brother would disappear.
He strip himself of his clothing, deciding that he will take the envelope to Detective Hines tomorrow himself during his Lunch hour.
He took a sorely quick shower and collapse himself on the king size bed naked. Turning on his stomach to reach for the remote to watch anything while he push the memories of his failure to the back of mind and think about the one person that let all those memories freeze away.
Kat Durance.
