I was spinning through the air, my senses dulled to nothing. I felt the world slow down as I neared the end, but my feeling of weightlessness was suddenly shattered as I crashed into the pit, sinking down into the foamy depths. I heard a shout, and stuck my hand into the air.
Someone grabbed my hand, and with a strong arm, pulled me out of the foam pit and onto the red padded matting around the edge.
I blinked several times in the light, trying to get my bearings, my head spinning.
"That was great, but you just need to work on landing straight up and not headfirst." Said my coach, Sapphire, from the side.
"Either jump higher or flip faster," said the guy who pulled me out.
I had been attempting this double flip for a few days, but being a slight beginner at trampolining, having only been introduced to the sport a month ago, of course I would have my faults.
"He could probably jump higher, but he wouldn't have as much control," Sapphire stated, tying her electric blue hair back into a ponytail and jumping onto the trampoline next to the foam pit.
"You guys know I can't land straight," I grinned.
The guy who pulled me out laughed, and Sapphire rolled her eyes, her bounces getting higher."Watch here, I'll demonstrate for you, again." She sighed, eyeing up the pit.
Yes, Sapphire is my coach-with-an-attitude. Everyone else in the trampolining squad says she lightens up once you get to know her, but I hadn't known her that long, so I guess I was still in the "I don't know you well enough" stage.
I watched in awe as she bounced, once, twice, and the third time, up into the air and into a double flip, her hair flipping after her as she spun, creating a streak of bright blue. She landed on her feet in the foam, and looked at me with one eyebrow raised in remark.
"Hey, why don't you try it?" I suggested at Calum, whom had pulled me out of the pit.
He took off his hoodie and took his place on the trampoline."What am I doing? Double flip, right." He nodded to himself, starting to bounce.
"Do you insist on taking your hoodie off for everything you do?" Sapphire questioned, shoving her hands into her pockets.
"I can't concentrate if I'm wearing sleeves!" He whined.
"Just do the flip!" I laughed.
He bounced up and leapt into the air. He flipped once, his limbs sprawling, and landed on his back in the pit.
That's Calum. He's a total idiot, but he's absolutely hilarious, and always seems to find a way to make a fool of himself unintentionally.
Sapphire proceeded to walk away shaking her head as I helped him out of the sea of foam cubes.
"Yeah, great, 10/10!" I cheered, he put his hoodie back on.
Calum bowed.
"Thank you thank you. I will now proceed to-"There were suddenly muffled shouts of children, that grew louder until the doors to the arena opened and various small children piled in.
"-make sure these children are safe..." He sighed.
"Oh, I forgot you're volunteering today," I said as we began walking towards the changing rooms.
"Yeah, I'm not ready for crowds of noisy children."
"You'll survive" I laughed, opening my locker to grab my bag. "I'll see you tomorrow at Club?"
He nodded, styling his blonde fringe to the side, as he subconsciously did every other minute.
"Dylan's gonna be there tomorrow," he winked, clicking his tongue at me.
"Aw come on man, you know I can't-"
"I know I know" he laughed, "seriously Fletcher, just ask him out already!"
He must've sensed my worry, or maybe seen it etched on my face, because he, after a few seconds of silence, comforted me with a-
"Well, the worst thing that could happen is he'll just say no"
-And started walking away towards the line of people attending the public trampolining session.I sighed. Sure, Calum was a great laugh, but there were some things he just... Didn't understand. Like trying to get a guy to like you back, when you're a guy yourself. Or plucking up the courage to ask said guy out, facing your fear of the immediate "no" that could sprout from said guy's mouth at that moment.
"Nevermind..." I muttered to myself as I shut my locker and swung my bag over my shoulder. I walked around the red bench in the middle of the changing room and heard something slide onto the floor. I looked down to see a registration form sitting next to a black Superdry bag and white Converse trainers. On the floor lay a black SnapBack, Which I picked up and set on top of the form.
I didn't dawdle. I wasn't the type to spy on other people's private information. New people joined the club the whole time, so what? I had no intention of finding their address, or spamming their emails like some creeps would.
I exited the changing rooms and walked past the trampoline arena. Calum stood at the side, watching a group of teenage boys trying to do tricks and showing off. One tried to flip and landed on his head, and Calum went over to him to have a word. The boy's friends giggled and slowly backed away to the sideline, Calum's stern words of "don't do tricks unless you know you can do them" seeming to petrify the boy.
I remembered the first time I had tried a flip. I'm pretty sure I had nearly broken my neck.
I smiled, checked out of the arena and went outside into the rain, to make the journey to the bus station.
