Chapter Seven

"I got you!!" Songbird watched as Sweetwing's kits played. Graykit bit down on Blackkit's shoulder as Blackkit pushed him off and pinned him down.

"No, I got you." Blackkit smiled. Blackkit was much more built then Graykit was. Yet, Graykit seemed a bit smarter than Blackkit. He was quite a curious kit, too.

"ThunderClan approaches!" A cat yowled. Songbird easily knew the voice was Blazeclaw's.

Songbird and Sweetwing looked as each other. Songbird rushed to grab all of her kits scruffs, and ran out of the den, hiding in her usual spot, except this time, Sweetwing followed, putting her kits beside them.

"Shh.." She soothed her kits as Songbird gently put hers down next to Sweetwing's. She peaked her head toward the clearing, Where Sagestar and Graypool stood, the cats looked familiar, but Songbird couldn't put her paw on their names.

"So.. This is the huge scary clan we should worry about?" Songbird had realized everyone else had hid, and only Sagestar and Graypool stood strongly.

"My clan-mates are away." They looked at him.

"A leader that's unguarded? How fun... Attack!" The two other cats lept on Sagestar, as the leader of them sent a blow towards Sagestar's neck. Blood splattered everywhere. Songbird's eyes widened when she realized it wasn't Sagestar's. She immediately ran into the clearing with every other warrior at her side, except Sweetwing, who stayed with the kits. Songbird lurched forward, gripping the leader of the group's neck in her mouth as she tore his flesh out. Tears flooded from her eyes as she dropped the body, watching him suffocate to death as he bled out. Her muzzle was covered in blood. The other cats watched in horror as they ran off.

"Graypool... You mouse-brain.. You don't have more lives to give.." Sagestar whispered.

She laid there, she was not dead yet, but only had heart-beats until she was.

"Songbird.." Graypool spoke up.

"I know, you must be really upset with me.." Graypool murmured. Songbird looked at her, tears falling on to the elder.

"I'm glad I died here.. I was happy to serve you all." Graypool smiled.

"Sagestar cannot waste a life here.. StarClan has told me of your future Songbird.." Graypool explained.

"Songbird.. You were like a daughter to me.. I loved you with all my heart.. You were a perfect apprentice.." The she-cat stated with a smile.

'Wait, Gray-.." Suddenly, the body of the old she-cat went limp. Songbird collapsed on top of the she-cats body, crying heavily. Sweetwing brought the kits over.

"Graypool..?" Graykit asked.

"Songbird, what is this red stuff?" Blackkit asked, his paws covered in Graypool's blood.

"Take them to the medicine den, to wash them off." Songbird ordered, her eyes still streaming tears. Sweetwing nodded.

"Also, Sweetwing.." Sweetwing looked at Songbird.

"Would you mother my kits?" Sweetwing blinked in surprise at her request.

"I just want you to feed them. I have to focus on being a medicine cat. My kits are important, but everyone is on the verge of death. Even.. Smokekit." She said, looking at the small kit who was huddling up to his sisters.

"Of course, Songbird. I'd do anything for you. We might as well be sisters." Sweetwing smiled. Songbird wished she could smile back, but the greif in her heart was heavy.

"Blazeclaw, Spiderfang." Sagestar looked them over.

"You two will bury Graypool after we sit vigil for her." The two male cats nodded. Then, Spiderfang went off to talk to Shyfoot, and Blazeclaw went with Sweetwing to the medicine den. Sagestar sat next to her.

"Songbird." He mumbled.

"I know this loss hurts.." Songbird looked at him, then laid her head down on Graypool's body.

"We may not've known her for long, but she's showed more love for me than my own mother did." Songbird mewed quietly.

"Songbird.. I know this is the wrong time.." Sagestar began, looking at her.

"But I know your kits are mine." Sagestar said. Songbird bit her tongue.

"How-"

"I over-heard you and Graypool talking.. Listen Songbird, I've moved on..." He started. Songbird's heart was going to shatter. She knew what he was going to say next.

"Dovefrost has proven to be a really good cat since she's been here.. I think I'm in love with her."
