Chapter 15: Birthday Bash

Ezra's P.O.V

   The sun was in my eyes when I started to awake. I got out of bed and changed into some clothes. I made my way to the kitchen to get some breakfast but everything was dark. 'What the?' I thought and turned the lights on. "SURPRISE! Happy fourteenth birthday, Ezra!" Kanan and Hera yelled. I jumped from the surprise and then frowned sadly. They saw my sadness and were about to ask me something, but I fled the kitchen to my room. I locked the door and went to my spot in the back of the closest. I stayed there with my legs held tightly to my chest. Thinking of 'those' memories that happened the last time I celebrated my birthday.

   Every time I blinked my eyes, a tornado showed and my parents disappearing. It made me start to shake and scared out of my mind. I even hear them gently singing happy birthday into my ear. "Ezra!" I hear Kanan and Hera yell and knocking on my door. I didn't get up to go unlock it. "Ezra, what's wrong, sweetie?!" I hear Hera say. "Open up the door, please" I hear Kanan say. I let out a depressed sigh and crawled out of my spot to go unlock the door. As soon as I did, I quickly ran back into my spot and hide.

   The door opened with a creak and the two adults entered the room. "Ezra, where are you?" Hera called. Someone came over to the closest and bent down looking my straight in the eye. "Ezra, please come out of there," Kanan said and offered me a hand. I took a second to think and crawled out of the closest. They lead me to my bed and we sat down. "What's wrong?" Hera asked sweetly. I bit my lip and decided to confess, "today is not only my birthday," I said, "it's also the day my parents died". I couldn't tell what their expressions were, because I was focused on keeping my eyes sight latched to the floor. The two sandwiched me in a hug. "Oh, we're so sorry. We didn't know," Hera said. "Next time you have a problem, come to me or Hera," Kanan said. I nodded my head and smiled.

   Kanan pulled out something from behind him, "maybe this will cheer you up,". It was a small thin present for me. I didn't care of the size or how wide it was, just who it came from was all I cared about. "You guys got me a present?" I said cheerfully. They chuckled at my enthusiasm and gave me the present. Inside was three of the same pieces of paper. "What are these?" I asked. "They are airport tickets. We planned to take you to Michigan and go play in the snow for two whole days," Hera explained. Snow? I never heard of that before, "What's snow?". "It is kind of like little white fragments of ice that fall from the sky during the change of season," Hera explained. "Then, why would we play in a bunch of ice?" I asked her. "This ice is really tiny that makes it soft enough to play in," she answered.

   I was still a bit confused, but I was going to see it for myself anyway. "Thank you guys for everything you've done for me," I said giving them both a hug. "No problem, Ez," Kanan said, ruffling my hair.

*time skip*

   "Hang on," Kanan instructed me. I helped on to the sleds handle bars. This was my first time ever riding a sled. He gave me a small push and slide down the slope. Hera was off to the side recording the whole thing. I was laughing and enjoying the whole trip so far. We built snowmen, had a snow ball fight, had cupcakes, and now sledding. When I reached the bottom, there was a bump in the snow and I crashed into it sending me flying. I face planted into the snow and laughed like I never laughed before. Hera and Kanan came down to see if I was ok and saw me laughing my head off. "That was fun! Can I do it again?!" I excitedly muffled under my scarf.

   They chuckled and Kanan fell on his back. He started to wave his legs and arms in the snow. I curiously stood up to see what in the world, Kanan was doing. He stopped and stood up. "This is called a snow angel," Kanan said pointing to the place where he was waving his arms and legs. "Cool," I fell back and did the same thing. I stood up to see my own snow angel. "And that was Ezra's first time riding and sled and making a snow angel," Hera said and turned off the camera. "Let's go back to the hotel before it gets any colder," she said. Kanan put his arm around me and we all walked to the hotel. 'Best birthday ever!' I said in my head and smiling.

   When we got back to the hotel, all of us took off our damp winter clothes. "Hey Ezra, can you come here?" Kanan called. I walked over to the bed that they were going to sleep on and sat down, "yes?" Hera sat on my right while Kanan on my left. "We got one more present for you," Hera chirped. Kanan handed me some papers and I started to read them. Tears of joy filled my eyes and I smiled ear to ear, "A-adoption p-p-papers. Really?!". They smiled and gave them a hug and almost yelled, "yes, yes, yes!" I couldn't stop jumping and the two laughed at my childish side. Kanan hugged me and Hera gave me a kiss on my forehead.

   I was so happy. I finally have my own family that trust, cares, and loves me. They don't think of me as a street rat, mistake or nothing. They truly care and I couldn't ask for anything more. When it was time for bed, Kanan and Hera said there goodnights to me. "Goodnight, mom and dad," I whispered and fell into a peaceful slumber.
