What is the saddest thing on earth?
Is it a country in turmoil,
burning in flames,
covered in smoke?
Is it a farmer looking at the window
to his crops during a storm?
Is it a documentary about a deer dying
at the hands of predators?
Or an innocent forest
catching wildfire just like how we catch a cold?
Or maybe perhaps it's a love letter
Unreturned
Or worse unread?
Or possibly a book burned
before anyone could read it
because it can spill blood
Instead of words?
Though no text is innocent I suppose. What makes a poet sad?
Is it the plight of his people dying and burning into ashes?
Is it the hope in his farmer father's eye,
that died in one stormy night?
Or is it when he realises that
someone's born only to become a prey, flammable, or radioactive,
just fuel to another's fire?
Or is it the way she did not return his letter
with another letter
Or the way he should have written it
one last time?
Or maybe is it how a poet is burned
like a damn book
Before anyone could read him
because he might spill blood
instead of words?
Though no text is innocent, I suppose. So what is the saddest thing on earth?
