"I liked learning things. How numbers worked together to explain the stars. How molecules made the world. All the ugly and wonderful things people had done in the last two thousand years."
Initial Thoughts:
Um...what the fuck did I just read.
This was so weird. This book contained some of the most horrible aspects - pedophila, masturbation, rape and the most gruesome imagery. "Messed up" is understatement of the year.
But...did I like it? Interesting question.
Normally, I love it when books leave me speechless. I love it when I'm dumbfounded after reading the last chapter. The last book which left me in that state was Dark Matter by Blake Crouch and I absolutely loved that book. It's one of the best books I've ever read. However, I can't say the same for this. I'm not even sure if I genuinely liked it. I'm not able to convince myself if I loved it or hated it which is why I'm not leaving any rating.
Don't get me wrong though, this book was very engrossing. I loved the astronomy aspect. Even when I read some extremely cringe-worthy chapters and thought, "I should stop. This is too much."....I still continued because I was addicted and my curiousity didn't vanish. No chapter, no relationship, no setting and no character bored me. Well, apart from the Sheriff. It was very disturbing to the point of being hilarious (Jimmy's letter anyone?) It is definitely not one of those books where you don't get any emotions, in fact, it's actually the opposite...but I just don't know what to make of the book as a whole.
I'm truly sorry for this very useless review and rating but I'm very unsure about my feellings. I got even more confused when I saw all five stars. Maybe if I saw some three or two, I would've come up with a conclusion but I didn't. 1 star seems too less but 5 stars seems too much. And I am not going to give this 5 stars just because everyone else did. Ugh. I just need some more time to think and maybe I'll skim it again.
