A few weeks passed at the palace. I was still the King's new shiny Concubine that hadn't yet been opened by the Emperor's hands. I tried to block the cruel murmurs spoken by the court ladies, but I started to ponder the reasons as to why the Emperor hadn't come back to my chambers. I was encouraged by the court officials to visit the King's chambers at night but every time I requested to see him, he denied my entrance. Was I really the thorned rose he claimed I was? Nerveless, it was shameful on my part that I wasn't fully serving the Emperor yet and patience for me was running thin.
Not only was I on the bottom of the social chain, boredom was constantly nagging me. My long days were spent with servant gossip and now unappealing walks to the garden. The Queen didn't approach me again, most likely she was entertained by my failure to the King. Scribe Jung Hoseok had slowly befriended me. He was the one who usually brought me the rejecting response of the King and also the one who offered me subtle comforts with stolen sweets from the kitchen. I didn't have anyone to talk freely with, all of my maids were unfamiliar to my friendly proposals at conversations.
"May Lady Hye-Rin accept Prince Namjoon's request to enter-?" I recognized Hoseok's voice. Suddenly my chamber door's flew open, flooding my room with sunlight. I was blinded for seconds with the sun's imprint.
"Who needs courtesy anyways?" A shadowed figure spoke, a rich voice followed by it.
When my pupils adjusted to the light I saw the Prince of Sex himself. Every person in Korea knew the infamous ways of Prince Namjoon. He was actively accompanied by the country's most beautiful women. The Prince was even rumored to impregnate palace maids. The royal family concealed his scandalous actions seamlessly but every now and then a few things had slipped out. In order to cover his behavior, the court glorified his talent with horse back riding. At every market, the prince's winnings in races were constantly announced and I even had once caught a maid speak freely about her admiration for him. My aunt had quickly silenced her before I could hear anymore.
Scribe Hoseok rushed in flustered, "Please Your Highness, I implore you not to enter a lady's chamber without being announced. It's not proper and you know what Her Royal Highness has sai-." Prince Namjoon cut him off by ruffling his bowed head.
"Now, now Hoseok. You really do need to stand down, don't always follow customs." A distinctive humorous tone was clearly heard in his voice, signifying the favoritism the royal brothers had for this scribe. The prince proceeded toward me in slow, dangerous strides. I had the decency to stay up straight, meeting bright eyes that screamed mischief. "So you're the Concubine that my brother has stayed away from," he straightens up to tower over me even more, "Do you know he hasn't recorded any hours with you to the court? It's really starting to worry some of us, you know with the whole crown prince situation." I freeze instantly, was I masking the surprising anger in my eyes well enough? Did the Emperor really not mention to anybody of our close encounter?
"I needed to see for myself what's so bad about you," he looks at me so closely I can't breathe properly, "But from what I can tell you're really not that bad." By now Prince Namjoon is incredibly near, I focus on his extremely unusual white colored hair, rebellion against the rules. "So what do you have in stock for me little flower?" He barks loudly into the sky, an absurd meaning behind his words. I can't help but turn ten shades darker in red and scoff in his face!
It takes a second for the rest of the room to realize that I had literally disrespected royalty, face to face. An audible silences stills every breath, every particle, every moment, until the prince looks me dead in the eye and laughs boisterly. My body feels heavy as lead when he proceeds to laugh until he holds his sides and tears are forming in his eyes. From my peripheral vision I note Hoseok observing the scene with a grin. Prince Namjoon manages to compose himself, only to make my heart stop once again when he presses his lips in my left ear. "You and I are going to get along fine little flower," he smiles into my ear, "But a word of advice darling, in order to survive this hellish wonderland, you have to pretend to like royalty, no matter how much you honestly want to slice their throats open until you bathe in their blood."
I register his words with a spinning head and a racing heart. He pulls away but not before nipping my earlobe. I yelp out of my enchantment, "Mmm, too bad you're forbidden fruit. Join me flower, there's another brother you need to meet."
