CHAPTER THREE:

He helps me up and then helps me into his car. I just sit in silence, completely mortified.

He starts the car then looks over at me.

He doesn't say anything, looks forward for a second, then looks back at me. "Look, I'm sorry about earlier." He stares at me then takes a deep breath, "It's complicated, but I cant mess with Carlito and his girls. I thought you were one of them…but then I heard what happened…Jasmine told me. I'm glad they got to you in time."

I'm so embarrassed, beyond embarrassed actually.

  I just look away.

Thinking back on the situation, anger starts to build because he could've prevented this whole thing.

"So you let that happen to other girls?" I say quietly, disgusted.

I cant believe I've been secretly in love with this guy for so long and I never knew what kind of person he actually is.

"I cant help what Carlito and his girls do. I cant get involved. Its just complicated. I'm sorry, okay? Just stay away from him." I don't know what he's talking about, and I don't want to know. I don't even want to be in the car with him, but honestly it feels good to sit down and have air condition.

  I just don't reply.

He backs out and gets on the main road, "I'll take you home, but I have to run a quick errand first." He says keeping his eyes focused on the empty road ahead.

He pulls into a dark and sketchy apartment building.

I quickly question if I should've gotten in the car with him. He turns the car off, "Stay here." He demands sternly.

I watch him go off to the side where a guy was waiting.

They're too far too see what they're doing, but it only takes a few minutes.

He gets in the car and turns it on without saying anything.

After making it to the main road he asks where I live and I tell him.

The rest of the ride was in silence.

He pulls up a few houses down, so my parents don't hear or see the car.

"Thanks." I say as he stops.

"No problem." He stares out the windshield. "Can I ask you a question?" He turns towards me and I shrug, "Why did you go? …Go to the party. You don't seem like the type of girl that would." He asks kind of randomly.

"I went…to see you." I told honestly and defeated. The cat was already out of the bag anyway, no point in lying now.

He smiles, "Oh that's right, you have a crush on me." He teases me, smirking.

"Shut up." I say embarrassingly laughing.

My smile turns into a frown as a flash back of him walking past me when I needed saving flashes through my mind.

"I have to go. Thanks for the ride." I say quickly.

As I take my seat belt off a part of it hits my neck. "Shit!" I curse loudly from the pain. Instantly, I pull down the visor and flip open the mirror to look at it.

I adjust the mirror and see the reflection of my neck. Red and purple bruises are already formed.

I gently run my fingers over it and then feel Zayn grab my hand.

"You have to believe me, I am so sorry." I can tell by the glistening in his eyes that he really is, but I don't reply. I don't really have anything to say to him.

I open the door and he turns his car off.

"What's wrong?" I question before getting out.

"Nothing." He replies. "I'm just going to walk you home... Don't want you walking alone in the dark."

I don't resist because in a way, I kind of want him too. I get out and he's already on my side.

We walk to my house silently, and honestly, awkwardly. We stop at my halfway open window, where I snuck out of earlier.

"Um, thanks for the ride and for walking me to my house." I thank him and we stand there for a second awkwardly.

"Maybe I'll see you around…just stay away from those parties." He laughs weakly at his bad humor then kisses me on the forehead.

My heart melts, despite his actions earlier… I've always imagined this.

Its not a kiss on the lips, but his lips were on me… that's gotta count.

He puts his hand on my shoulder and delicately rubs my bruise with his thumb. "Stay safe, okay?"

He lets go and stares at me for a second, then smiles weakly and leaves.

I watch him for a few moments disappear into the darkness, before I go inside.

As I plop down on my bed, a whirlwind of emotions hit me at once. As the night replays through my mind, for a quick second I consider calling the police.

After thinking about it, I decide not too.

My parents would know that I snuck out and I would be on that carlito's hit list. I know he'd come after me. As difficult as it is, it's better to just let the situation go… I'll never see him again anyway.

I lay down and my body just aches. I really should take a hot shower, but i'll just wait until the morning.

I roll over and check my phone, but I have no messages. Honestly, I'm surprised that Jasmine hasn't called or texted to make sure I was okay. She's been my best friend since forever but lately, she's been changing. I guess as we're growing up, we're slowly growing a part.

I sigh and turn my phone off.

I close my eyes to sleep but all I can think about is Carlito and what happened.

and Zayn.
