"Will you go check on Oliver? They should be back by now," I ask.Nick looks up, "Why me?"
"It's not like you're doing anything dangerous, you're just going to tell him to get his ass going and get back here."
"But what if something happened and that's why they're not here?"
"Come on, Nick, you're the only one here, and I have to call Johansson's family."
"I'm here," Barty walks in scrolling through something on his tablet. He looks up when he reaches the the main desk, "What do you need?"
"Can you go check on Oliver and my interns, and the treasure hunters too. I told them they could come back here and it's been hours."
"Will do." He disappears, and I sit down at the desk, logging into the computer and pulling up Alex's file.
"Did you know Alex is married?"
"Hm?"
"Alex is married, he has a husband."
"Oh, yeah, Jared. He's great."
"You've met him?"
"Yeah, I was at the wedding. It was six months ago, Barty was one of the groomsmen."
"What? Six months ago? But- well he did take those two weeks off, I just thought it was family stuff. And why did you and Barty get invited? I'm his boss."
"Technically, we're all his bosses. He invited everyone in the lab. He even invited you, the invitation it still unopened on your desk, I can go get it for you."
"That's not true, I would have-"
"Biz, I'm not trying to say you're a bad person. But you don't pay attention to the interns, especially if they aren't magic folk."
"Okay, first, I'm going to ignore the fact that you just said magic folk. Second, I do pay attention to the interns, I'm a good boss."
"You pay attention to their work, not their personal life. You hardly ever talk about anyone's personal life."
"That is not true, what about you, Barty and Margo? I talk to you guys about personal stuff, you're my friends."
"Because we were here when you and Jack started, back when you were an intern, sort of. And we hang out after work. When you're here, we never talk about anything but work."
"But, I-"
"I'm not saying you're a bad boss or anything, you're just really focused on your work."
Before I can respond, the lab suddenly has more people in it, and a lot more noise. "Holiday, this is-"
"-bad, I know, I-"
"Oliver, shut up!" Bill shouts.
"Don't yell at me!"
"You did this, so, I'm going to yell."
"Well, I didn't see you coming up with anything, so I did something."
"Shut up, shut up!" I yell, "What the fuck is going on?" I stand up, approaching the circle of curse breakers and interns surrounding my assistant and- "What is the muggle archeologist doing tied to a chair?" The man, Dr. Pranav I think, looks up at me, trying to shout through the duct tape on his mouth. "I'll get to you in a minute. Would anyone like to explain? Mr. Holiday?"
Oliver avoids making eye-contact, "Well, um, he sort of showed up while we were cleaning up, and I guess he saw the explosion. He started talking about how something he found was odd, and it seemed like magic, and I panicked and this happened."
