I jolt awake, startled by the piercing ring of the phone. I rub the right side of my face, slapping it slightly, trying to get it's feeling back. I scramble to find the phone in the mess on my desk. After a moment, my wondering hand grips the plastic object, and I jerk it off it's stand, nearly hitting myself in the face. "Gonzalez!"
"Bizzy, you're back! I thought you were in Greece."
I sigh, "No James, I got back two days ago, which you would have known if you paid attention to your emails," I snap. I immediately regret that response, realizing that I probably shouldn't tell off the Presidential Magic Advisor and the head of the Federal Bureau of Magic research department. "I'm sorry, sir. This last object has proved rather difficult to identify."
"I understand. How long should that take you?"
I perk up, hoping he needs me for a new case, "I can have Nick take over if you need me. Do you need me?"
"You really enjoy this job don't you?"
"Just tell me where I'm going. I need to get out of here."
"The desert outside Cairo. You're taking over a dig and exploration for the local government."
"Their team must not be happy."
"The government knows that their team can't handle it. The team isn't happy, but they'll get over it. There's another safe dig about 100 miles away they're heading to. Can you do it?"
"Yes! I'll leave in twenty minutes. Send me the information and coordinates!"
—
I land, my feet sinking a few inches in the sand. I grin, looking around at the vast desert. I slip my hands around my backpack straps, starting in the direction of the dig.
"Biz, can you hear me?"
"Jack! You fixed the com system."
"Yes I did. You can all bow down to my amazingness."
"You turned it on and off again, Jackass," Margo chimes in.
"Stop calling me that."
"I'm sorry, but we've been over this. You should talk to your parents and ask why they named you Jack Budy, because that's just cruel."
I laugh, "Stop bickering. Where's Barty?"
"He's helping Nick with your artifact."
"Nick couldn't figure it out by himself? I should fire him."
"Please don't, he's funny, and knows how to fix computers."
"I can fix computers," Jack points out.
"You can turn them off and on again."
I shake my head, blocking out their arguing as I walk. I look at my watch, then up at the sky. It will be dark when the interns get here. I guess I'll start without them. After about twenty minutes of walking, and listening to my coworkers battle it out for the last piece of pie, I reach the dig site. I would have apparated right here, but their equipment could pick it up accidentally.
"You must be Dr. Gonzalez." I turn and see a dark skinned man, wearing a well-tailored suit, which is not very appropriate for the desert weather.
I approach him, shaking his out-stretched hand, "Yes, that's me. And you are?"
"I work with the Egyptian Government, advising them on certain things." Magic. "My name isn't important." Of course, magical agents in any government don't like to reveal themselves to anyone.
