"Are you sure this is the right set?" I ask Bill, trying desperately for him to look at me. He turns to Jack instead, nodding.
"Yes. I went through all of the final possibilities and this one makes the most sense. It's the technically the simplest one. Shouldn't you know all of this, you're the expert."
I ignore his last comment, not responding. Dillon speaks up, "Why would it be the simplest one?"
"Because it's always the one you least expect. The rest of the process was extremely hard so it makes sense that it would change. Also, the other 7 had sacrifices that didn't make sense in Egyptian culture."
"Does this one have sacrifice?" Jack asks, "Because I hate dead things."
"No sacrifice. It's just a spell. One person starts, and the next continues. It has seven sections, because even though it says five sources of magic are enough, seven is recommended."
"Because the spell can cause emotional damage," I finish, reading through the instructions he indicated. "With seven people, the trauma is evenly distributed. With six one of us has to get some extra emotional shit," I explain digging my wand out of my satchel.
"So we need to decide which person starts, because they're the one who's going to get it the worst," Bill starts, "I can do it, I'm okay with it."
"I should do it, Biz says I have it too easy in life," Jack stands up, raising his hand.
"You're not used to the field, I-"
"That doesn't mean I can't perform a simple countercurse."
I roll my eyes, holding up my book to the light and pointing my wand at the tablet. I start saying the first section, and the minute I finish saying the first word, the memories hit like a ton of bricks. It takes the men about 30 seconds to realize what I did.
"Bizzy, you can't-!"
"She already started, we can't stop or the object will explode," Bill sighs, moving to stand next to me. I feel him staring at me, but I ignore him, trying to keep my voice from shaking as I continue my paragraph.
I watch as the line of light between my wand and the tablet gets brighter, trying to concentrate on that rather than the horrifying images that won't go away. Once I finish, Bill continues with the next portion, then Maddox, Jack, Oliver and Dillon.
I take in a deep breath before starting the final paragraph, unable to stop the tears from falling. I feel a hand grip my shoulder, and I know it's him without looking. My hand starts to shake as I say the final line, and once it's over, there's a small puff of smoke, and I fall backwards. Bill manages to catch me and keeps both of us upright.
"Well. That's that," Oliver speaks first, brushing his hands together.
I nod, pulling myself out of the eldest Weasley's grip, "Jack, hand me that box," I point at the slim wooden box in the corner. He grabs it, holding it out.
I take it from him, opening it and setting it on the ground. Carefully, I levitate the tablet letting it land on the soft padding in the box. I ignore the fact that my hand is still shaking, casting the normal protective spells, finally shutting the box loudly with one final curse.
"Jack, are we good back at headquarters?"
"Nick and Margo are still quarantined, but I should be good to bring the tablet there."
"Have Oliver do that. Someone should monitor the interns and the other objects. The rest of you are welcome to our tent, we have a fully stocked bar and amazing leftover chinese food." I mutter flatly, turning to exit the tomb. I hear Oliver disapparate, and Jack calls after me.
He catches up quickly, falling into step next to me, "You okay?"
"No, Jack. Very dark memories were just forced back into my head, memories that I worked very hard to get rid of. Plus, nearly all of my magical energy or whatever was just drained out of me."
"Do you want to talk to me about it?"
"No."
"Do you want to talk to Bill about it?"
I sigh, "No. Anyways, Bill probably hates me. And I don't like having to tell the whole story, it's easier if they know already."
"Then why don't you want to talk to me?"
"I don't want to talk about it at all. Go check on the interns."
He doesn't respond, veering off in the opposite direction when we reach the exit. I drag my feet in the sand, eventually entering the tent. It takes a surprisingly long time for the rest of the gang to join me in my drinking, I'm already halfway through a bottle of vodka when Dillon enters the tent, followed by Maddox. After a moment, Bill came in, looking rather distraught about something with Jack right on his heals.
The ass approaches me carefully, "Bizz, maybe some food, or water?"
"Fuck off, Jack."
"Okay then," he spins in place, turning to the others, "Gentlemen, can I get you something to drink?"
I let out a big breath, ignoring their trivial conversations, curling into a tiny ball and sinking into the corner of the couch as far as it will let me, all the while keeping my bottle from spilling. "Bizzy, I'm leaving, the lab is no longer a hot zone, so-"
"Whatever, bye," I snap. I hear him sigh, but he disapparates without responding.
"That was more draining than I thought it would be."
I glance up at Bill with narrowed eyes, "You don't say?"
He sits on the ottoman in front of me, taking a large gulp of his drink- whiskey, I'm assuming. "You didn't have to do that, you shouldn't have had to take the worst of it."
I take another chug of vodka, not responding.
"You could have told me you were a witch. I wouldn't have- oh," he stops mid sentence, noticing that I started crying. "Biz."
"Don't look at me like that," I choke out between sobs, screwing the top onto my empty bottle and chucking it to the other side of the couch. I shouldn't be this upset, but the magic emotional abuse plus the exhaustion equals ugly sobbing in front of the love of my life who doesn't know the he's the love of my life, which makes me cry more.
I am ripped from my thought processes when I am lifted off of the couch gently. "What are you-?"
"Just shut up," Bill orders as he slides underneath me, putting me back down in his lap. After a very brief moment of internal protests, I give in. Burying my face in his chest, I grab a fist full of his shirt, holding on for dear life. He rubs my back pressing a light kiss to the top of my head.
After what feels like forever, but what was more like five minutes of crying, Bill carefully stands up, cradling me carefully as he walks to my room. He manages to pull the covers back before laying me down on my bed. He pulls the covers over me then sits next to me. He rubs my side for a while, waiting for me to cry myself to sleep.
As I drift off, he pulls his hand away, and start to walk towards the door.
"Bill?"
He sighs, stopping, "Yes?"
"Can you-" Ugh, I sound so pathetic right now, "Can you stay? Please?"
After a moment of silence, he responds, "Sure." He walks back over to the bed, sliding under the covers, and hesitantly moves closer to me, eventually wrapping an arm around my waist. I smile, closing my eyes and letting myself drift off into a deep sleep.
