Chapter 5
I stare down at the bottom of my coffee, feigning interest in the thick brown substance. I realise how ridiculous I must look to the rest of the people in the small cafe; wrapped up in a blanket that only just covers what's important. Not to mention the countless bruises I must be sporting. I didn't dare look at my reflection.
Cabe's piercing gaze stays fixed on me. I really don't need his attention as well. I can't understand why he would even invite me to have coffee with him. But the idea of something warm was too tempting to turn down. At this point I'm starting to regret it.
"Do you have to stare so much?" I ask him, frustration clear on my face.
He pauses, wetting his lips. I can't keep my eyes from that small action. Until I see the tip of his mouth lifting into a smirk. Busted. I lift my eyes to his. Mirth dances there. I scowl, red making an unwanted appearance upon my cheeks. Fuck, I can't seem to stop blushing around him. Ass.
"Do you actually want that coffee or is it just there to be stared at?" He mocks my earlier comment.
I glare at him before lifting the scalding liquid and taking a large sip. Holy shit. That's really fucking hot. I keep a blank face as the beverage continues to burn the back of my throat. I'm used to blocking off certain pains.
He raises an eyebrow at my antics. I just continue to glare, not trusting my voice at the moment.
"I hope that wasn't too hot." Mirth continues to stain his eyes, as he lets out another mocking comment.
"Nope it was completely perfect. If anything it was warmer than I expected." I let out a sarcastic smile.
He releases a chuckle. A very sexy chuckle. Jesus Sawyer, keep your fucking sexual thoughts in check.
"So Lilly..." He takes a pause glancing up and down my only slightly covered figure. It takes me a minute to realise he's talking to me, "Lilly". Stupid fake name. Cabe doesn't seem to notice my moment of confusion as he continues, "Do you maybe want to come to my place for something to wear." His voice seems unsure, his eyes finally breaking their hold on mine as he glances down at his hands.
I think for a moment. I don't have a home here; let alone clothes. I mean I definitely can't go wondering the streets in this get up. I'll stick out like a soar thumb.
Definitely not good.
Then again, how do I know I can trust him, especially considering the last time I wandered off with a strange guy. I shiver at that, memories quickly climbing to the surface.
Cabe's voice suddenly breaks me from my reverie. "Hey, I swear I'm not pulling anything on you, I'm just trying to help you out. I mean you don't look like your from around here, the least I could do is give you something to wear." Honesty shines in his eyes. I'm sure mine only show wariness.
He speaks up again. "Don't forget I did bring you here from way out at sea, surely if I were to try anything I would have done it there."
I let out a sigh. He has a point. "Uh...I guess...I could...um...use something to wear." My voice sounds cautious. "Thanks." I whisper, staring hard at the tiled floor.
"No problem." His soft voice is calming.
His concerned eyes stay glued to me. I finally look up. My breathe catches in my throat at the intensity of his gaze. Damn those blue eyes.
Snapping out of it, I retract my eyes once again. "Um...should we go now?" I stare at the collar of his shirt.
"Yeah sure, let's go." We stand and Cabe drops a few notes on the table. I blush realising I don't actually have any money. Noticing my hesitancy Cabe stops. "Oh, I kind of figured you wouldn't have any money on you, considering what you're wearing. I just paid for the both of us anyway." He flashes a white smile at me. I almost drool at the sight of his dimples. I suppress a smile of my own.
