Chapter 6

I had only one piece left to send to home when I heard the doorbell ring. I got up to answer the door and left the boys to take their next turn.  I opened the white painted door to the sight of pouring rain, trees bending in the wind, and three people huddling under the little overhand right outside my doorway.

Ashley’s short brown hair was soaking wet, along with her purple t-shirt and jeans,  with a little seven year old girl in front of her, her long slightly curly brown hair sticking to her face and back. Courtney stood right behind both of them, black shirt soaked just like her jeans, along with her shoulder length blonde hair matted and sticking to her face and neck. Her blue-ish green eyes looked like a cat ready to claw somebody.

Courtney put some hair behind one ear, “Can we come in now?”

I let them inside away from the pouring rain. Jenn went straight over to where the boys were sitting. They stood up to meet her, showing them to all be about the same height, where Aaron was the same height as Jenna and Josh was slightly taller.

Her face lit up like she had forgotten something. Running back over Jenn hugged me, with the top of her head just reaching under my chest.  Hugging her tight I told her, “Happy belated birthday! How’s it felt to be seven?”

Jenn’s brown eyes shone, “Amazing! My mom got me a box of matches and some firecrackers!”

I looked down at her, “We’re going to have to worry about you with fire like we do Josh now won’t we?”

She laughed, running back over to Aaron and Josh. They all sat down while she took off her wet faded dark red jacket, leaving a dry blue shirt underneath.

Ashley and Courtney kicked off their shoes and followed me upstairs to my bedroom. I closed the door behind us and told them they could set their stuff down on the floor wherever they wanted.

They quickly changed jeans and shirts, Ashley choosing another purple one and Courtney another black one.

Ashley sat on the floor and Courtney plopped on my bed. Joining them I figured I’d sit on the cedar chest at the foot of my bed.

Crossing her legs Ashley asked in a laid back tone, “So what we gonna do?”

I heard Courtney behind me, “We weren’t even here for five minutes and you’re already bored?”

Ashley retorted, “I want to know what we’re in store for. Maybe like set fire to a tree again like last year.”

I gave a nervous laugh, “He-he, not again Ashley. We had to lie and say we were playing with matches and they thought girls our age must be stupid to be playing with matches like that!”

She grumbled, “It was funny though.”

Courtney added, “And when Ash spazzed your brother Aaron when he tried to tell people what you did and we had to pass it off as a seizure.”

I sighed, “Yeah Ashley’s power hurts a lot.”

Whining in a joking way Courtney asked, “Why don’t I get any powers? I could do something so much better with them!”

I looked at her, “Because you’re meant to be the friend that is normal and does all the cool stuff without the powers. That makes you look so much cooler than us.”

            With that she huffed.

An idea came to me, “Do you guys want to go to target in a day or two and get some food and snacks for the vacation?”

Lying on her back Ashley put her finger in the air, “If donuts are involved I am all for it.”

            Courtney said, “Chocolate donuts, though.”

Ashley sat up quick, “Heck no! Powdered donuts.”

Crossing her arms Courtney said, “I like chocolate donuts, Haila likes chocolate donuts, which makes you out numbered.”

Ashley made a puppy dog whining sound.

I laughed, “We can get some of each.”

“Yays” came from the both of them.

Glancing at the clock I saw it read one thirty-two pm.

I opened my mouth to speak again when suddenly the power went out, causing some surprised shouts coming from downstairs, and leaving us in darkness except for an ever so little glow from outside.
