Chapter 5
{ Luis }
"Luis, are you okay?"
I heard a soft voice above me and opened my eyes wide enough to see a blurry outline. Breathing in the slight scent of lilacs, I realized it was Jaylee but closed my eyes again.
"Louie, wake up!"
She was shaking me now, and I groaned. My nose and lungs were on fire, and the swirling patterns of water in my head made me dizzy. All I could think was, I could have died. Again.
Jaylee made an impatient noise. I sucked in a shallow breath of air and managed to murmur, "Thanks."
I felt her smile even though my eyes were closed, and as she leaned in I held my breath. Slowly, I opened my eyes to see her face only inches away from mine, and all I could do was stare at her eyes. They're green, not blue, I realized. Sea green. Just from looking at her eyes I felt my stomach lurch.
She backed away and said, "You're welcome. Now get up, Luis--you look alive enough to do it. I'll go get you some water, alright?"
I groaned again, which she took as a yes. As she went to get the water I pushed myself up into a sitting position. Immediately I started coughing and hacking, and Jaylee ran back to me with a cup in her hand. "Here, drink this."
But I took one look at the water and shook my head. I started coughing again, and when the racking died down I looked around me. I suddenly realized I was on a bed, covered with several towels.
"Where am I?" I rasped, my throat burning.
"Julia's house...er, mansion. Rick pulled you out from the pool and we helped get all the water out of you."
"You guys carried me here?"
"Unfortunately. You're actually pretty heavy, considering how skinny you are."
I managed a weak smile and said, "It's the muscles."
She did her signature eye roll. "Right, you mean those non-existent ones."
I closed my eyes and heard Jack's voice in my head, "Nice abs you got there...Oh right, you haven't got any" and shuddered.
"Guess what?" Jaylee's voice jarred me out of my thoughts, and my eyes fluttered open.
"Hm?"
"I smashed Jack's nose...his rib is broken too. He's in the hospital now." she said proudly.
"You what?!" I exclaimed, causing another fit of coughs.
"Told'ya I could handle it."
"Yeah but why would you do that? You're gonna get into big trouble!"
Jaylee rolled her eyes again. "Jack has a sick, twisted mind and personality. I mean, he almost killedyou, didn't he?"
I mumbled, "Well...yeah."
"Exactly. By the way, I think we should go now. I don't think you wanna stay for the after-party."
"The after-party?"
"Y'know, the usual. Beer and a hell lot of drunken minors."
"Oh. Well then, let's go."
She raised an eyebrow. "You're, um, half naked right now. Brought any extra clothes?"
"Uh..." I looked away.
"Seriously? Why didn't you--"
"Hey, I never actually planned on getting in the pool!"
