Chapter 8
My gaze focused solely on the sheet music in front of me, I held the last note of the piece in a lovely vibrato until Kyle's voice died out.
The crowd erupted into loud claps and a few occasional hoots, surprising me greatly. I turned bright red, and their cheering became even louder as Kyle came up to me, took my free hand, and bowed. I've played in front of larger audiences than this, but for some reason their applause seemed deafening to my ears.
"See?" Kyle said with a grin. "You didn't do bad at all!"
I smiled back and took a deep breath, unable to believe all the clapping we were receiving. I turned to the audience, waved, and walked downstage with Kyle, where Luis was waiting for me.
"Jaylee, that was beyond amazing." he breathed, holding me as if he couldn't believe who I was. I laughed lightly and replied, "Thanks. Honestly, I was so nervous up there I thought I would faint."
"Oh, but you didn't." Kyle came up beside me, and I rolled my eyes.
"You didn't do too bad yourself," Luis said, letting go of me and flashing a smile at Kyle. I had to agree--Kyle's voice was unbelievable.
"Well, now that that's over with..." I started, but I didn't have to finish because just then, a delicious smell wafted through the air and some of the people sighed in delight. An excited Mrs. Blythe came up to us and thanked Kyle and I for the performance. I thought I saw Luis shifting around uncomfortably, but then someone from down the hall called out, "Dinner's ready!", and everyone's head turned.
"Finally." Mrs. Blythe remarked, while someone guided the large crowd into the dining hall. I handed back the glass violin I'd borrowed, and she smiled. "Let us all go and enjoy the food, shall we?"
I nodded eagerly and looked around, but Luis and Kyle were nowhere to be found.
Ah, boys.

"Mmm, that was good." Kyle groaned as he stumbled into the house, eyes closed.
"As good as my cooking?"
Beth had appeared at the kitchen doorway, cocking an eyebrow. Kyle's eyes flew open when he heard her voice. Flashing a grin, he replied, "Course not, ma'am. You can cook a pig's foot better than their best stew."
"Aww, come here, you." She came up to him and ruffled his hair, smiling widely. They hadn't seen each other for years either, but whenever Kyle came over as a child, he would gobble down anything Beth made for him. They had formed an instant bond; the chef and the hungry little boy.
I dropped my bags on the floor and smiled lazily at their reunion. I told them I had to go upstairs to change out of my dress, and Luis did the same. Kyle, however, stayed behind, and then last thing I heard before I closed my door was, "Would you mind if I made you some nice, big, chocolate cake?"
Double eye-roll.
I quickly shrugged off my dress and changed into something more comfortable, before walking downstairs again. Luis was already there with Kyle, looking around the living room. When they saw me come downstairs, Kyle frowned a bit and asked, "Hey, is there anything to play here?"
"Nope. We've never had any video games here, remember?"
He looked surprised. "I wonder how I managed staying alive here when I was young."
Suddenly, I heard the phone ring. Looking at the caller I.D., I pursed my lips and sighed through my nose. It was my mother.
"Hello?"
