Chapter 11
"Jaylee!"
The moment I stepped out of the car, an ecstatic looking Kyle ran up to wrap his arms around me and spin me around like he used to when we were little. If there was anything awkward between us back at the library, he didn't show it.
He let go of me and before I had a chance to object, he launched into a rant.
"I'm so sorry I kissed you so suddenly back in the library but I just, I think I really like you so I decided to go for it. I thought you didn't like me back because, you know, you kinda pushed me away but I guess you were just surprised." He inhaled deeply, then continued rambling on. "So when you texted me that you liked the almost-kiss I was really happy and-"
"What in the lord's name is all that racket?" demanded a butler from inside the house.
Kyle looked up in surprise, and a grin stretched across his face. "Nothing, sir!" he yelled back. "We're coming right in!" He swiftly closed the car door and led me inside the house by my hand. A glum-looking Luis sat curled up on the couch, texting on his phone.
"Hey Luis." I greeted, a bit worried by the dull look on his face.
"Hmm?" he mumbled, fingers still typing away. I frowned and shrugged. "Come on, Jaylah, we have matters to discuss!" Kyle's fingers tugged at my sleeve, very much reminding me of the little shop owner who I'd just met today.
"Okay, I'm coming!" I snapped, stumbling after him. "Will you just calm down?" I muttered under my breath. I was dragged into his room and as he plopped down on his bed, I leaned back in his swivel chair and raised an eyebrow at him.
"So..." his crazy burst of energy had died down by now and he was looking awfully nervous. "About the date..."
I opened my mouth to stop him. There isn't going to be a date; this was all set up!
But they way he sat there, fiddling with his fingers and everything, made me realize that it would only make him sad. Like him or not, he was still my best friend. And a promise was a promise, so I sighed and said,
"I'm free tomorrow."
A grin spread across his face, and suddenly all the awkwardness was gone.
"I have the perfect place we could go."
"Oh, and where's that?" I asked, with a glimmer of excitement and curiousity. If it was somewhere Kyle chose, I was bound to like it.
"I know you're gonna hate me for this, but...it's a surprise." He smirked.
Great. A surprise. I let a sigh escape my mouth and spun around slowly on his chair. "One thing, though."
"Hm?"
"It's just a date. We're not-" I fumbled for words.
"I know." He simply said. "Don't worry, Jaylee, just be ready for tomorrow. It'll be fun." He smiled, and reached his hand out to squeeze mine. I gave him a wan smile. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad. I mean, what could possibly go wrong?
