Chapter 4

I woke up bright and early the next morning...and not because I wanted to.

It was about seven and I was still fast asleep, submerged in my dreams of graduating high school and moving on to an actual career--one that didn't involve being surrounded by paparazzi. All of a sudden, my eyes flew open because I felt, sensed, that someone was in my room. And no one, I repeat, no one, went into my room without permission.

So I sat up immediately, glared at whoever was standing by the doorway, and growled, "Get the hell out."

Fully awake now, my eyes widened when I realized that it was Luis standing in my room, next to one of the maids who was muttering, "Told'ya she wouldn't like it."

Oh, crap. My brain went into panic mode as I reached up to smooth out my hair as best as I could. There's a guy in my room and I just woke up and my hair looks like a freaking mess!

The maid must've sensed my panic because she quickly pulled Luis out into the hallway and closed the door behind him. I sighed in relief and closed my eyes, breathing deeply. I never allowed anyone, not even the servants, to see me unless I was dressed appropriately. Fluffy pink sleep robes were definitely not appropriate. And I'd just let Luis Carson see me in one.

Well, I thought, getting off the bed and shuffling towards the bathroom door, It could've been worse. But first things first...

I scrubbed my teeth util they sparkled, splashed my face with cold water to kill my sleepy look, changed into a tank-top and denim short shorts, then brushed my hair until it shined. Finally, after putting on just enough make-up to make it look like my skin was naturally this flawless, I stepped outside my room.

Luis was waiting outside, holding several bags. When I came out he took one look at me, grinned, and remarked, "Took you long enough. Why put on make-up when it's just going to wash off at the pool?"

I blinked in surprise, but quickly regained my composure. "It's waterproof, Louie."

His grin didn't falter. "Well, good morning to you too, Jaylee."

I rolled my eyes at his sunshiney mood. "Get this straight, Luis; no one steps into my room without an invitation. That includes you."

"But you look absolutely stunning when you get up in the morning!"

I smacked his arm hard and he flinched. "Oops, sorry. Self-defense classes." I smiled sweetly at him and picked up one of his bags. "Come on, let's get these into your room." I led him to Guest Room #4, which just so happened to be right across the hall from my room. How considerate of my mother, I thought dryly.

I pushed open the door to reveal a crisp room with brown and golden hues from floor to ceiling. It was dominated by a large oak bed sitting atop a light-brown carpet, along with a tall cherry-wood bookshelf and its matching desk. The only other things in the room were a closet, a flatscreen TV propped on the wall, and golden curtains that hung from the large wall-to-ceiling windows.

"Welcome to you new room." I told Luis, "Which, coincidentally, is right in front of mine. Get settled down. I'll get a laptop in here for you, and do whatever it is boys do until we leave for the party at twelve."

"Wow, thanks." Luis dropped his bags by the doorway and walked around the room with his mouth open. "This room is freaking amazing!" He walked by his desk and muttered about how many drawers there were, and then popped open the closet doors. "Damn, my clothes won't even fill up half this thing."
