Chapter 9 New Friends and Vows
Blackness consumed me. It was crushing me, making me claustrophobic. I was surprised I could still even breathe.
“Mercury,” I heard a voice say softly.
“Mother?” I asked. I was taken aback that I could actually speak.
“Yes, Mercury. Now, I need you to wake up,” whispered the darkness.
“But how?” I asked.
“I have no idea. But you do.”
How do I know? It’s not like I can move or anything. I strained my ears, listening for something, anything really. Then I heard a voice. Not my mother’s voice. It was slightly more feminine, more younger. It was Hermione’s.
“C’mon, Mere. Wake up! Hagrid’s hippogriff, Buckbeak has to go to trial for hurting Draco Malfoy. Malfoy insulted him and Buckbeak attacked. Its horrible. He’s going to be executed!” Hermione filled me in on what I missed. “The twins miss you too. They aren’t pranking as much and only go out of the common room for lessons, food, and the potion. It’s almost finished by the way. But don’t worry, we won’t take it without you.”
Hermione paused for a moment before continuing. “Harry saw the Grim again. It was at the Quidditch match he said. The lightning lit up the sky and he saw an outline in the shape of a big dog. Of course, that was before he was attacked by Dementors, so he could have been a bit out of it.”
I listened with rapt attention.
“Your dad was spotted in Dufftown by a Muggle. By the time the aurors got there, he was gone. I’m worried. You know that Dufftown isn’t far from here.”
I inwardly growled at the mention of my father. He’d sold out Lily and James Potter to Voldemort, the darkest and dangerous wizard of all time. He left my mom right before I was born. All I could feel was hatred.
“C’mon, Mere. Everyone misses you! Please wake up?” Then I heard shuffling, and I knew that Hermione had walked away.
A few moments later to me, but probably hours later in the world, I heard another voice. One of my best friends’. George.
“Hermione’s right, Mere. You need to wake up. We all miss you. Fred’s pacing around the common room all the time, Hermione’s not up to date on her homework. Of course, I’m not much better off. I miss you too…” He paused.
“I’m pretty sure the potion misses you too,” he laughed. “Ever since you’ve gone, its gurgling and bubbling. The book doesn’t say anything about it boiling.
“Pranks aren’t happening either. And when they do, our hearts aren’t in it. Even Hermione agreed to help with a prank on Filch to get her mind off of things. She’s really stressed, you know. She’s got homework, Buckbeak’s execution, you in the hospital because of your Boggart, Harry and the Grim, her and Ron fighting… I suppose that she hasn’t told you about that. Well you see, Ron thinks that Hermione’s cat, Crookshanks, killed Scabbers. I reckon he just ran off for a bit. Don’t know why he’s all bothered by it, I mean, it’s not like he liked him anyhow. Fred’s really worried about her. I reckon he likes her.
Before, I mentioned your Boggart. What was it? Hermione reckons it’s a memory. Did Bellatrix and Rookwood honestly kill your mother? I mean, I guess I could picture it, Bella and Augustus being Death Eaters and murderers, after all. But I couldn’t imagine why they would want to kill your mother. Oh wait… Your last name really is Potter, isn’t it? I guess I just didn’t notice it before, you know? Now that you and Harry don’t speak anymore. Why is that? I remember Harry screaming about how you were trying to steal Hermione’s friendship away from him because you’re jealous. I can’t think of why though. I mean, your smart, funny, absolutely beautiful…”
