We had been riding for several hours, I was tired but not enough to stop reiterating my speech in my head. I'm the new Heda ... no ... ai laik Klark kom Polis ... I'm the new queen of the thirteen clans and ... Raah nothing worked! Nothing I'll say will convince them, I looked like a little girl who was repeating a poem she had learned in school.

"Don't bother yourself, it's easy!" Lexa said kindly. She looked at me, I didn't even heard her.

"Clarke! Did you even listen to me?"

"Sorry what? What did you say?"

"You're going to be fine, it's not the end of the world, we've all done that on our coronation day, and see, I'm still alive"

"I know, but what if they don't like me? Perhaps they'll think I'm not mature enough to reign, and maybe they'll be right. You know what happened to Clarissa, she was challenged to a duel and she lost." My voice quivered.

"Clarke calm down, it's not going to happened to you. Clarissa was challenged because she was a bad queen, dangerous for the kingdom but you, you ..." The procession stopped suddenly. "What is it? Why are we slowing down?" No one was talking, and the guards were quiet which pissed off Lexa. She got down of her horse and went to the front of the procession, I followed her and then we both stopped, thunderstruck by the horror of what was in front of our eyes.

It was like a sea of dead bodies, all spread on the floor. Lexa was staring of stupefaction but I couldn't see this any longer, I turned my head and covered my mouth to stifle a scream. Lexa stopped staring and went down the hill through the bodies.

"Lexa! No! We're not going down there." She turns and gives me a cold and desperate look.

"This is our duty Clarke, if our people think his Queens are afraid, it will bring forth chaos and this is not how we rule, now come with me." I followed her without saying a single word, I couldn't. All of this around me was like a nightmare I didn't know how to wake up from. I saw men, women, and children expanded at my feet. Maybe Lexa felt the same way and that was why she seemed so cold and overbearing.

Walking through this battlefield felt like forever but suddenly we heard a guard calling us, he had found a survivor. We both ran to him, she was a young woman, she immediately recognized Lexa.

"Heda ..." she sighed. Lexa came close to her and take her head to put it gently on her knees. She was hurt by a bullet in her chest, and her blood didn't stop flowing out. Lexa tried to calm her by caressing her hair slowly.

"I'm here ... I'm here ... We're going to take you out of here, you're gonna be okay." She stopped and with a calm voice asked: "Can you tell me what happened?"

"Skaikru ... They attacked while we slept. They slaughtered everyone to reclaim this territory ... This is their land now, we can leave or we can die." Lexa looked up worried, and then carried the girl to the guard.

"Escort her to Polis, I want my personal physician to take care of her, she'll stay in my apartment until my return." The guards approved and carried her on a horse. But one of them came to see Lexa, she looked at him with kindness and he took her hands.

"Your majesty where are you going?" he asked with so much care in his voice that we could think he was about to fall apart.

"This attack needs to be answered, our retribution must be swift, and it must be brutal! The Kingdom of Polis needs to make a show of force ... jus drein jus draun.* » The guard repeated Lexa's last words as a prayer, he bowed and kissed her hands. They exchanged a long stare and then Lexa made him lift up and looked deeply into his eyes. "Aspen ... I ... I'll come back, I always come back you know that, right?" He slowly released her hands and Lexa watched him as he went away.

It wasn't a good time to ask her whatever was going on with this guy, but before I had the chance to say anything she pointed the other side of the hill: "Skaikru, do you know what this involve? A lot of trained people, guns and a fortress where it's impossible to break in. We need to draw them out for a fair fight, where our army could have a decent chance against these kind of weapons."

"Or we could try to do that with diplomacy

"Or we could try to do that with diplomacy. This attack is a nonsense, it had been 20 years since the Skaikru landed here and they never attacked us or the coalition you told me that, so why now?"

"That's not the problem Clarke! This is not our way! We don't wait to be under attacked to realize we need to fight back! You don't get it, you just suggest to let them slaughtered us, and go send them a peace treaty?" She was angry as hell, I could taste that in her voice but this anger was here to cover the real pain inside of her.

"You know this is not what I said. But think, Lexa, how many chances do we have against automaticweapons? Our people wouldn't survive another killing like this one. Let me go,let me talk to their leader. You wanted me to prove to our people I was worthyto be their Queen, here's my chance, let me go to Arkadia." Lexa looking wasdark but empty, I hadn't seen her this way since mom died.

It was scaring the hell out of me.
