DAY 143 (1st Eleasis)(August) cont....
Oz also spent a lot of the early morning search after clues of Barndal's whereabouts. He eventually turned up at the Yawning Portal and learned that he'd been seen going down into the Undermountain with the following people:
''
Hydner Guffin - a fighter and their leader. Tough, kind of ugly, mean and bullying
Mant Trinskor - a cleric - dwarf - tough, battle hardened
Ylvette Ruler - a rogue - female - tough, ex house breaker
Vanish - a rogue - male - smiling, pick pocket from Waterdeep
Splendid Bunto - a elf male - pleasant, after adventure
"Socks" McGee - seemed nice, but out of his depth
They were in search for a lost magic item which Hydner hoped would bring their
adventure party glory and make it into the 'big league'.
This was the 'Horn of Guffin' - lost to his family generations ago, but legend had it that it is in the Undermountain.
- so they all went down the well on day 98 - they were seen by the clientele of the inn and were soon forgotten, but a book maker called Mr Teeth remembered them as he bet a lot of money on them.
It was
25/1 on any of them coming back
50/1 on them all coming back
100/1 on them coming back with the 'horn'
''
Oz then returned to the OJB and went to bed, giving some money to Alduin to go buy him a magic sack. Alduin went to the TSV and purchased it from Shallerim.
At two o'clock it was time for the raid on the Vanguard house. First up was Liamae who took a potion of gaseous form and went up onto the roof of the house and down the chimney.
Appearing in the room where he was being held, as if from nowhere, terrified young Zoltan, but eventually Liamae landed a 'charm' spell on him and had him take one of the potions. She did too, and out they went, back out the chimney. On the ground outside they turned back into normal forms and Liamae took the lad back off to the North Ward and his family.
Next, with the ever useful charm spell again, Oz and Nes persuaded the gate guards (a human called Springer and an halfling called Octo) of the villa to go to the pub. They then enter the grounds and disabled the trap at the door.
But they were then spotted and the battle began. Two assassins at the door were quickly overwhelmed and fled up the stairs. The main assault team, consisting of Oz, Alduin, Corum, Silvia, Nes and Raya ran in and up the sweeping stairs to the upstairs balcony.
They barricaded the left side and concentrated on the right side. They noticed that the doors all had holes in them at eye height and at the bottom, like mouse holes. Arrows were fired from the upper holes and Oz was hit by one.
It turned out to be poisoned.
Alduin ran at the door and kicked it in. The others poured in, beating back the assassins and rogues, down the corridor to another door to the right.
The rogues all seemed to have snake venom on their weapons but since most of the blows landed on Alduin it was not as deadly as the villians might have hoped.
Next though, pureblood and halfblood yuan-ti came from their rooms and joined the fight. Between them though, Alduin and Corum killed them off, beating them down in the corridor. One tried to turn into a snake and flee, but Oz blocked up its escape hole then stamped it to death.
What thieves and assassins that remained in the east wing corridor fled to their rooms and locked their doors.
Meanwhile Gharlie had been within (she had been playing cards with two rogues called Sweats and Batty and an assassin called Julia Badseed) and as two of the rogues came back she killed one in ambush and chased away the other. She joined the others as the main fight was ending.
Oz identified the door that he thought was that of Jesker's room and disarmed a dart trap and unlocked the door. Alduin stepped in, but set off a huge ball of fire, some sort of trap the engulfed the whole room and half the corridor in flame.
Undeterred though, they piled in the room and killed Jesker in no more than a couple of blows.
While all that had been happening, sounds of tiles being dislodged from the roof were heard. What started as a minor distraction became more serious when it began to sound like an elephant has just landed on the roof.
The raiders all piled into the guard room on the first floor and dragging treasure and bodies (to be searched and looted later) started to hurl things out of the window.
Meanwhile, noxious acid began to drip down from the ceiling and greenish poisonous gas through cracks in the walls. Alduin nipped along the corridor to have a look and saw a large black dragon rampaging through the entrance hall, having gained access through the roof.
'Where are you De Rosen? Show yourself!' bellowed the dragon.
Alduin joined the others climbing down from or jumping out the window. In the street they arranged a barrow for the bodies and Corum went off to talk to the watch.
From a distance they watched the villa as the dragon rampaged within. Windows exploded outwards and cracking crashing noises heralded the collapse of parts of the roof. Then all of a sudden - complete silence.
They speculated for a moment as to how a black dragon could have got into the city, then observing large groups of watchmen and city guards arriving decided to make their way away from the area.
