Dean's POV
"She isn't here, Dean," Castiel had to say to me, so I don't stand there in the doorway for the rest of eternity, searching for something that doesn't want to be found.
I sigh and turn away. Of course she's not. She hasn't been for the last three months. But everyday, I can't help but hope. Have faith, everyone says to me. Faith is the substance of things hoped for, and the evidence of things not seen, they say to me. I have both, so why won't my prayers come true? Why won't my baby girl come back to me?
Cas leads me to my impala, and he gets into drivers side, because I'm too upset to drive. Sometimes in the middle of the night, I wake up in tears, and Cas has to hold me for hours at a time just for me to calm down.
"Mr. Winchester!" I hear a male voice scream. "Mr. Novak!"
I look up, confused, in the direction of the voice. A tall, brown haired boy, who looks vaguely familiar, is carrying Rose in his arms bridal style.
My eyes widen, but I feel like crying once I realize she's unconscious.
"What happened to her?!" I scream at him. "Damn you, what happened?!"
He's breathing heavily. "She took a pill," he gasps. "I'm not sure what it was . . . get her to a hospital!"
I accept Rose from his arms, and place her in the back of my car to a shocked Royal who places her head in his lap.
"Donnie, get your scrawny ass in here, we gotta go! Now!" He screams at the boy who fumbles into the seat, placing Rose's feet in his lap.
As soon as I shut the door, Cas peels out of the parking lot, and gases it to the nearest hospital, which is thankfully only ten minutes away.
I stared in my rearview mirror at my baby girl lying unconscious in the backseat. God, I haven't seen her in so long. She looked underfed, and she had circles underneath her eyes from where it looks like she had barely slept. But she was still my little girl, and she was in trouble.
It took a total of about five minutes for Cas to break at least seven laws to get to the hospital, crossing two red lights, three stop signs, and almost running over one pedestrian.
I didn't know who that boy in the backseat of my car was, but Royal did, and I was shit-sure glad that he brought her to me. I've never known a hero besides Harry Potter to wear glasses before.
Even before the impala stopped rolling, I throw my door open, and go to the backseat, lifting Rose into my arms, and carrying her into the place. My subconscious was going back to that party so long ago, where she was so drunk she could barely walk. Her black hair had gotten so long, it's tips scraped the concrete as her head lolled backwards.
I pushed open the door with my foot, to a nurse talking animatedly on the phone. I wait a second, and when she doesn't notice me standing there, I get a little angry.
"Hey!" I scream at her, making her jump and drop her phone. I hear behind me as Cas, Royal, and that other boy come running in.
The girl looked at me slightly annoyed, but her eyes widen at Rose and she calls behind her for a gurney and a doctor. Out of seemingly nowhere, they both come and the next bit is all just kind of a blur of strapping Rose's lump body to a gurney, and wheeling her away, leaving me alone with Cas and Royal and the four-eyed Savior.
The next thing I know, Cas is gathering me up into his arms, and it's only then that I realize I'm crying. I'm pretty sure that Cas is talking to me. Reassuring me. His voice is calming for a little bit, but then his voice turns sharper. Harsher.
"What happened, Donnie?" His voice stands out against the silence of the empty waiting room. His arms wrap tighter around me protectively.
I lift my head up to hear the next part. The boy starts stammering before starting the story.
"W-well, I-I was finishing sweeping up the glass she had dropped in the Ichabod's, and I followed her out to the back alley behind the place. She was talking to a guy, I've never seen him before, but she took something from him in exchange for money. She put her hand to her mouth like this-" he gestures. "I tried to warn her, but it was too late. She took the pill."
"What was it?" Cas demands. "What was it?!"
The boy looks a little scared. "I-I'm not sure. But it couldn't have been good."
Suddenly my face is wet with tears that are not mine. Cas's knees go week, making me the one who holds him upright. I press my lips to the top of his feather-soft hair. The same hair I promised myself I would memorize its texture with my lips so long ago when I was in highschool.
A doctor walks out of a room, a bit later, and starts heading towards us. "Are any of you her parents?" He asks, looking between me and Cas.
"We are," I say, nodding my head down at Cas, who is still shaking in my arms.
The doctor, who I realize his name is Mr. Shirley, stares blankly at me with his blue eyes. "You two." He says, not believing. "Uh huh. Very funny. Now where's the girl's mother?"
With Cas in one of my arms, I step forward, grabbing him by the front of his white coat with my other hand and pull him up to meet my eyes.
"I am sick," I hiss in his face, "of everyone assuming that we are not her parents, just because we don't fit the gender roles. Helldammit, why can't you believe me when I say something that it's true?"
The doctor actually looks scared, whether it be from the venom in my voice, or the coldness in my eyes. "Alright, alright!" He holds his hands up in faux defeat. "Just let go of me you psychotic bastard!"
I throw him backwards, causing him to go tumbling, but he doesn't fall over. Then I look down at Cas, and touch his face gently. "Cas?" I whisper. "C'mon, angel, let's go see her."
He looks up at me. He's stopped crying, but his eyes are still red-rimmed. "W-we can see h-her?" He chokes out, making the broken pieces of my heart shatter even more.
I kiss him gently. "Of course we can, angel. Of course we can." I look behind me at Royal and the boy named Donnie. "You guys can come too you know."
Royal looks up hopefully. Donnie keeps his head down, still silently crying. "Well what are we waiting for?" He says, his voice cracking a little at the end, from faking enthusiasm. He stands up, pulling the boy up with him. He follows where the doctor had come from, practically throwing the door open.
It takes only a second for me to wrap my arms around Cas and lead him to the emergency room.
