It was a Saturday evening, and everyone was outside talking and such. One of our neighbors, an old head everyone knew, was grilling because it was the 4th. Chris, Omari, and Quincy all stood around drinking and such by Chris's new car. He hadn't been working with Rodney lately, and I wasn't gonna question why.
I was just happy that he was out of the streets and actually home where he needed to be. He had been selling for so long, day and night, that even after buying a new car, he still had enough left over to look for a new place.
We were short of a few thousand for a house on the north side of town, but with me getting a new job soon, we would have enough in no time.
While feeding Carter her little snacks, I noticed Jordan come out of her apartment. Jamari ran out first and ran straight to Chris. Even though Jordan and I weren't speaking, Chris was still checking up on Jamari. Since he didn't have a man in his life, Chris just felt obligated to be there for him. I didn't really care because I thought it was sweet. As long as I didn't have to see Jordan, I was fine.
Just my luck, I saw Jordan walking over to me. I rolled my eyes and blew air out of my mouth. Why would she want to talk to me now. It had been 2 months and I still didn't give a damn about anything she had to say.
"Can I talk to you?" She stood in front of me.
"Jordan I honestly don't really want to hear anything you have to say. It's a good night, please don't ruin it."
"Please hear me out." She pleaded.
"Ugh. Go ahead." I huffed.
"I miss you Nique." She started. "I know I messed up, putting myself in your business and everything but it's only because I care. I don't want to see you hurt."
"But it's my decision Jordan. I know Chris better than you do. I know when he's going through something tough, putting him down doesn't help anything. I have to support his decisions because in the end, he's only looking out for me and our daughter." I explained to her. "And as my friend, you should understand that."
"I'm sorry okay." She sighed. "I just.. I know some things that you don't and I was only saying that stuff to protect you."
"What are you talking about?" I sat up some in my chair.
"Well, people have been talking. They know Chris is on the come up and these bitches are starting to flock. They know about you and they don't give a damn." She looked around.
I didn't know whether to believe her or not. Chris had never been unfaithful to me and I know he wouldn't entertain any thirsty bitches. But, with money comes arrogance. Going from being dead broke to having thousands of dollars can change a person.
And not for good.
I glanced back over to Chris and noticed a few girls were now around him and his friends. Like I said before, Chris had never been unfaithful and I never thought twice when I saw a girl trying to talk to him.
But tonight, things were different. Although the girls looked to be talking to Omari and Quincy, I couldn't help but notice one of them all into whatever Chris was talking about. Her long weave went down to her butt, and her coke bottle shape popped in the romper she was wearing.
