"It's a baby boy!" The doctor said excitedly as she pointed to the screen.
I glanced over and saw a few tears rolling down Jordan's face while she looked at the screen. I couldn't deny the small piece of me that was happy to be having a son. But that happiness was soon overtaken with guilt, because my first son wouldn't be by the woman I loved.
Another month had gone by and I still hadn't told Zonnique anything about what was going on. Things were going so good for us. Anytime I tried to say anything about it, I would get all choked up and not be able to say anything.
I wanted to be honest, but I couldn't.
"I'll see you again next month." She smiled as she wiped the stuff off of Jordan's stomach. "And here are a few pictures from the ultrasound."
Jordan took the pictures and we left the room. I waited while she made her appointment for next month and answered a few texts on my phone from Omari and Quincy. Our new client had just dropped off our cut of the latest shipment. Seeing as it was a big one, our cuts were gonna be pretty damn big.
Jordan clearing her throat caught my attention and I locked my phone and put it back in my pocket. I followed her out to the car and got in, starting the drive back to her apartment.
"You happy about having a son?" She asked, looking over at me.
I licked my lips before speaking. "Ima be honest with you Jordan, I wanna be happy but I can't."
"I get it." She shrugged.
"I'm happy I'm about to have a little boy, I'm just not happy about how he's getting here." I came to a stop at a red light.
"It is what it is." She sighed. "I'm not happy about how he's getting here either but I love my baby regardless."
Before I could respond back to what she had just said, my phone vibrated down in the cup holder. I picked it up to see a text from Nique. I opened it and saw she had sent a picture of Carter eating a bowl of strawberries and had red juice all over her white t-shirt.
I quickly texted back before the light turned green and kept driving. After dropping Jordan back off, I headed back home. When I walked in, I could hear Zonnique humming from inside the kitchen. I leaned against the counter and watched her dance around the kitchen with Carter on her hip.
"Again mommy!" Carter squealed clapping her hands.
"Maybe later on baby." She sat her down. "Mommy's tired."
"Hi daddy." She turned around and noticed me standing there.
I scooped her up and placed kisses all over her face making her giggle. Nique folded her arms across her chest and looked at me with an eyebrow raised.
"You better start announcing yourself Christopher."
"Tell your momma to leave me alone." I pinched Carter's cheeks.
"Jordan text me." She walked back towards the fridge.
"What she wanted?" I sat down in one of the bar stools and sat Carter on top of the counter.
