Bigamy: The crime of marrying a person while one is still legally married to someone else.
*************************
It was the birthdays of my dear, beloved, wretched sisters ― Anne and Maria. And do you know what that meant? A ball.
Another bloody, blasted ball.
With some strategic hint dropping about the twins' birthdays one week in advance, Aunt Branks managed to cleverly convince one of her friends, Mrs Mason, the wife of a rich merchant, to hold a ball. Aunt Branks then 'reluctantly' allowed herself to be persuaded to have the grand party arranged. A party where females had to dress all pretty and dance with the most eligible bachelors until their feet fell off.
For someone not so bright, she sure knew how to get what she wanted.
Anne and Maria wondered around the house with bright smiles for a week. Seeing their smug jolliness for just a day was enough to make me gag. One week of hearing them brag about how they were Aunt's favourites made me want to drown myself in the River Thames.
"Aunt arranged a grand ball for me. She's never done that for any of you all before." Anne would smirk and look down at us with her dainty little nostrils. I swear I noticed a little booger in there once.
Maria would then point out nastily, "Do you mean, us? Aunt prepared the ball for us both."
Anne would then sniff disdainfully at her twin, unhappy that she wasn't the sole sister recieving such benefits.
Lisbeth would either glare enviously at them or just trudge around the house morosely. As for Gertrude and Ella, they would nod politely to the arrogant rantings like proper little ladies they were.
I just told the twins that they could stick that ball where the sun didn't shine. None too expected, I received a good chiding from my Aunt and a lecture on how to act like a proper lady.
"It's my big day today!" Anne trilled on the eventful Saturday morning, waking the whole house with her enthusiasm. "It's my birthday!"
Maria stared sourly at her sister. "It's my big day too!" Anne ignored her.
Deep in the crevices of my mind, I tried to cook up an excuse to not attend the torture parade that was to be held in the evening.
Maybe I can claim that I'm not well. No Aunt would never believe me.
Or I can say that Eve is having an existential crisis and as a good friend, it is my duty to go to her house and comfort her. No that wouldn't work either.
Or I can run away...
My ideas became more and more extreme. It ranged from having a fainting fit to butchering Anne or Maria so that the ball would be cancelled.
"Get dressed girls! We are leaving in an hour!" Aunt Branks shrieked like a deranged happy harpy.
Without any sensible route of escape, I was forced into my corset and laced up so firmly that I wheezed, "Not so tight!"
