Liza followed Dominic Toretto to the garage. She massaged one hand with the other and thought about what she was going to say. She had been gone for years. She had left before Brian had showed up.
The gang was different from who it had been. Jessie, Vince, and Letty were dead. There was more new faces and cars. Expensive looking cars. Toretto had been up to lots. Liza had received invites to come back, but had turned them down.
Now she was here, about to ask Dominic Toretto for help, after she had cut them out of her life.
"Why are you back?" Dom asked again. Liza knew she needed to answer and not beat around the bush. There was no beating around the bush with Dominic Toretto. This wasn't the playful interaction at the race.
"I came to ask for help, but I don't think I can ask that of you. You have a family to watch over now. I can't come in here and force you into a battle that isn't yours." Liza grabbed a tork wrench off the work table and started messing with it. She had too much nervous energy. It was almost as if she was about to race, but she wasn't excited. "I'm sorry for wasting your time."
"Liza Maverick. You are a part of my family and I got nothing but time." Dom crossed his arms. He was fiercely loyal and even the years of silence didn't stop him from feeling that way. He felt like he had been just as distant with her as she had been with him. "Tell me."
"I have been working for a man as a getaway driver of sorts." Liza started, "I got a good cut and it was great fun. I didn't mind driving him away from banks, but the more I worked with him the more he trusted me with pick ups. He started shipping me across borders to act as a more than just a getaway driver. "
"A couple weeks ago I picked him up and he had a little boy with him. He kidnapped the kid and trusted me enough to say that he did it to get the family to pay and he wasn't planning on keeping the kid alive. When he got out of the car to do a different errand I drove off with the kid."
"I take it he's not the kind guy to go lightly on those who betray him." Dom looked at her side ways.
"No. I also know enough of his secrets that I am a threat to him. I may have just been the getaway driver, but I took him from places he had just robbed. I also have picked up some of his associate that were more social than he was."
"What do we think we can do for you?" Dom asked. "Cause it sounds like to me, you're running to us to put a wall between him and you."
"I'm am running, but to a place with higher ground." Liza said, "if it comes to any of you guys or me I will be in front, not you. I just need help finding a way to get rid of him without doing the dirty. I'm not exactly the type to kill someone and I don't want someone else to kill him. I just want him not hurting people, without me having to go to the cops and going into witness protection for the rest of my life."
"If he comes around here we'll scare him off." Dom said.
"He burned down Charlie's garage." Liza said. Just saying it out loud made her want to sit in a corner and cry, but that wasn't who she was. She would fight till the end. "We lost all of our cars, but the dodge."
Dom leaned back against the work bench. Liza watched him take a deep breath. He knew Liza and Charlie were collectors of cars. They fixed them up to perfection and sometimes beyond.
"Race wars is this weekend. I'm sure that you can win slips." Dom suggested. He wasn't one to apologize for what wasn't his fault. Liza was right when she had said she had gotten herself into this mess. "Who is this guy anyways?"
"I never got a name. I called him Mr. Sir."
"Maybe next time you should at least get a name before you jump in bed with him."
"Maybe." Liza pinched her nose. The way she said it made Dominic jump to conclusions.
"You mean you actually slept with this guy?" Dominic got an edge to his voice that wasn't there earlier. He was finally starting to lose his patience with Liza.
"No! I didn't!" Liza said angrily. "I may be stupid, but I am not that stupid!"
"Not that stupid? You started working for a guy without knowing all the details. You turned on that guy. Now he wants you dead and in trying to do so he destroyed your best friend's life work."
"Don't you think I know that!" Liza was yelling now. "I was doing everything to keep that bastard away, okay? He's been after me for years! He's not the only one that didn't give a name. I almost thought he would never find me, but then he turned up at the garage and blew it up!"
Liza turned away. "I shouldn't have come back here. I knew it was stupid, but I'm desperate! And you know what Dominic Toretto you were the guy I thought of! Okay?! But if I'm not welcome, fine. I'm just dropping Charlie off so she can have a good start over anyways."
Liza went to leave, but Dominic grabbed her arm. "Liza. Stay. You know Charlie can't race. How is she suppose to get cars fast?"
"Shut up." Liza leaned against the side of Dom's dodge. "I know."
"So your staying?"
"Yeah."
"Good, we need a racer like you." Dom said. He moved maybe an inch closer to Liza, but she missed it. She stood up and walked out of the garage door.
"See you on the streets, Toretto."
