THREE MONTHS LATER
Liza climbed in the passenger seat of Dominic's Dodge. She felt edgy, like she needed to be doing something, but there wasn't anything to do. She sighed and put on her seat belt.
"Why are you sighing?" Dom asked. He hand his left hand on the wheel and his right on the gear shift. He was smiling at her.
"I'd rather be driving then not." Liza admitted. She was used to being the one behind the wheel, not sitting shotgun while the person took the risks.
"Well this little dispute is between Charlie and I and needs to be settled that way." Dominic said.
"I know. It just seems weird that your dispute is about me, but I have no say." Liza thought about the whole situation. Dominic wanted Liza to move in with him. Charlie claimed that Liza was her indentured servant and couldn't move in with Dom till she'd paid off her debt. (Twelve cars to go.)
"You've made it clear you don't care ether way." Dom said.
"And yet I'm sitting in your car and not Charlie's" Liza pointed out. They pulled up to next to Charlie where she was waiting for them on the street. She was in her 1968 Chevy Malibu and Roman was in her shot gun seat.
"From here to the rail road?" Taylor called.
"That's the quarter mile." Dominic smiled.
"Please win." Liza said as he rolled up his window. Mia walked up and stood in front of the two roaring beasts. She put her hands in the air and Dom smiled.
"I won't lose." Mia threw her hands down and they took off. Liza was pressed back in to her seat as the Chevy reared up on its back two wheels. She laughed. The car landed and they took off. Charlie was a good driver she stuck right next to them. Dom changed gears, and they pulled a hair's breath in front of her.
Liza cheered as they slowly gained a lead. She smiled. The rush. She loved the rush. Being in the passenger seat of a race wasn't as good as being the driver, but it was enough. She could still feel the rumble of the engine. The stakes were also more personal. Dom smiled at Liza.
Charlie kept with them. There was a moment when she even gained on them, but it wasn't enough. Dominic won. Liza laughed and moved over to be closer to Dom. She kissed him in the cheek. "Hey winner. I guess I get to move in."
"Yes you do." Dom turned and met her lips with his, "What do you say we take a little detour first. Go drive down some roads we haven't been yet."
"I'm down with that." Liza sat back in her seat, "Where to Dom?"
"I was thinking Mexico. Have you been to Rio?"
"No, but I have heard of your adventures there."
"Yeah. The tropics sound nice."
"And it will be nice to give Mia and Brian a break from us. They can spend some time with just the four of them."
"Maybe we'll hit the circuit in Tokyo or Europe and get the rest of the cars you owe Charlie."
"Maybe. Let's see where the next quarter mile takes us." Liza smiled and Dom smiled back. They were two of the same creatures. Their hearts ran on milage. They breathed speed. The rush always called to them, but not even that rush compared to them being together.
"I love you."
"I love you, too."
