The first day of race wars was coming to a close. It was starting to get late. The sun had set and more people were interested in dancing than racing.
Dom watched the crowd of party people and took a long drink out of his Corona. He leaned against his car and thought about race wars. He thought about what they meant to him today and what they had meant to him when he had created them with Letty.
"How'd you do today?" Brian asked Dom as he and Mia came over.
"I didn't race." Dom said.
"Really?" Brian helped himself to a Corona.
"Really." Dom said. He spotted Liza a ways away talking to some other woman. Brian followed his gaze.
"She was almost always racing today." Brian commented. "I heard she won a couple cars, and a good amount of money."
"She has a lot to make up for." Dom said.
"Yeah. I heard. Thirty-two cars." Brian said.
"She is well on her way to redeeming herself." Mia commented. They all watched Liza break away from the group of girls and come over to them.
"Hey, you should come dance with me." Liza smiled at Dom, "Please?"
Dom raised an eyebrow. "You have a lot of spunk Maverick. Did you drink too much?"
"I haven't had anything. Most people drink so they think they can dance. I stay sober so I know I can." She slid her hand into Dom's. "C'mon Toretto."
Dominic smiled and downed the rest of his Corona. He let Liza lead him off to the crowd of moving bodies. Brian let out a short ha and turned to Mia.
"Can you believe that?"
"Liza's a great girl. She was one of the best racers in our crew. Dom and her have always gotten along."
"Then why did she leave?" Brian said. "She obviously had a thing for Dom and it looks like he is willing to go for a test drive."
"That's exactly why." Mia sighed. "Liza always harbored a crush on Dom. Letty didn't like it. They fought. Almost like you and Vince did when you first got here, except less fists were thrown."
"Liza swore to Letty that she wouldn't get in between her and Dominic," Mia continued. "Letty didn't believe her. To settle the argument, they raced. The bet was if Liza won she could stick around, if she lost she would leave."
"And she lost." Brian said.
"Yeah. She left and didn't even come back around when Letty died, until now. Dominic still doesn't know that that is the main reason she left and stayed away. The reason she gave him and everyone else is that she and the LA heat don't get along, and Charlie's garage was in Idaho."
"Oh." Brian said. He turned searched the dancing crowd to find Dom and Liza. They were hanging on the edge. Liza was doing most of the dancing.
"C'mon. Let's go makes sure the kids are sleeping through all this." Mia pulled Brian away. He followed her.
Liza and Dom kept dancing. The pounding music was supplied by someone's car with a nice pair of subs. Liza loved dancing and she was glad Dom was a good sport. He didn't always dance, but he could appreciate a good tune.
They danced for a couple of songs. Liza was jumping and swaying to the music when Dom put an arm around her. Liza's breath caught and she stopped moving. Dom leaned in so he could be heard over the music.
"I want a rematch." He said.
Liza smiled and she met Dom's gaze. "Let's go."
They walked away from the crowd into the dark.
"I'll meet you on the race way."Liza said. She walked off toward where she had parked the dodge. Liza walked around someone's camper and stood there for a minute wondering what exactly she was doing.
She decided she was racing Dominic Toretto. She was just hanging out with him. And if this turned into more then that... Liza had a brief thought of Letty bashing her head in with a baseball bat. Then she laughed to herself. Not because Letty couldn't do that anymore, but because she really would have.
Liza had honored the bet she had made with Letty. She had left and stayed away. Yes Letty was gone, but Liza was not going to replace her. Liza could never replace her.
To make up for the time she had spent standing no where, Liza ran to get her Dodge Charger. She pulled the keys out of her pocket, unlocked the car, and slid into the front seat.
The tires sprayed gravel as Liza peeled out. She drove around other cars and people's campers. Race wars was a giant camp out. This night was the party night. Dancing. Beer.
Tomorrow would be a good day to race. Those who were smart wouldn't have partied as hard, but those who did and maybe even continued the party the next day would be losing their money and possibly their cars.
Liza pulled up next to Dominic. The race way was empty except for a couple flood lights that had been set up for a the few races that took place after dark.
Dominic looked over at Liza and smirked. He revved his engine and Liza responded in kind. Two 1970 Dodge Chargers. One black. One red. Two great drivers.
By some unspoken call of go they both started out at the same time. Liza was over taken by an overwhelming sense of right. Her behind the wheel. Racing. There was nothing like it. There would never be anything like it. There would never be anything as great as the quarter mile race.
Liza sped across the finish line Dom right next to her. She pulled to a stop and Dom followed suit, or maybe it was the other way around.
"I think I won." Liza teased.
"Oh no, Honey. That win was mine." Dominic smiled.
"We should have had someone watching." Liza leaned against her car. Dominic came and joined her, "You know, if you took off that ridiculous hood ornament you would probably beat me. It adds unnecessary weight to your car."
"I like to think of it as a handicap." Dom turned to Liza. They were inches apart. Liza stared at at him.
"Dom. Are you drunk?" Liza said quietly.
"No." Dom leaned in.
