The plan, I thought wasn’t going to work, but Clyde was confident in his decision. I was going to go along with it because it was also time as a date and to hang out with Maggie. Clyde thought that after Chad found out that Maggie’s best friend was going out with Clyde that he wouldn’t stand to be around her.
“Ok, I’m in,” I said with very little confidence.
“Good,” he said, “now go and ask her if she wants to.”
I walked toward Maggie who was only a few steps away.
“Hey. Do you and Chad wanna go to the beach with Clyde and me?” I pointed my head in Clyde’s direction “Sort of like a double date.”
“That sounds great!” she sounded like that was going to be the first date they’ve been on.
“OK, so like around seven?”
“Oh, you mean tonight?” she said, her voice was very disappointed.
“Yeah,”
“OK, I’ll just have to reschedule my hang out day with Kacie. She’ll understand…won’t she?”
“Of course!” I said, “the beach seven. You check if that’s OK with Chad and text me the answer.”
I walked to Clyde feeling awful. She looked so happy and excited, but she didn’t know that that night was going to be the worst night of her life.
“What’s wrong?” Clyde asked examining my facial expression.
“Maggie looked so…so thrilled and eager about tonight,”
“Oh…well she’ll live,” he said, lifting my chin to look at him.
“OK, I gotta get to class. See you at lunch?”
“Yup, see ya.”
I walked to English class wondering if that plan was really the best plan. I sat down and didn’t pay any attention the entire class. I really thought long and hard about this. It wasn’t easy for me not to know exactly what was going to happen.
“Hey, Marcie!” Kacie yelled over the crowd of people.
“Hey, I’m sitting with Clyde today. I hope that’s OK?”
“Of course.” She walked off to go sit at the table with Maggie and their friends.
I started toward Clyde’s surfer table. I really did like sitting with older boys. It made me feel…cool and good about myself. They were also funny, nice and fun to be around.
“Hey, Marcie,” one of them said. It was hard to remember their names at times because, to me, they all looked alike.
“Hey,” I responded. I sat down in my usual seat next to Clyde.
After school I drove home with Clyde. We talked about how we are going to do this, because Chad will remember Clyde and want to leave. I decided that Maggie’s probably not going to tell Chad who Clyde is. So Clyde is going to be bringing back the pizza when they’d get there. And the plan would begin.
When I got home I got some leftover spaghetti from the fridge. I brought it and my backpack upstairs with me. It took me a while to finish my homework but when I did the doorbell rang. I raced down to get it.
