Chapter 7

Logan pulled into the parking lot of a white building that was next door to the hospital. He parked in a parking space that wasn’t too close, but not that far of a walk either. Reluctantly, I got out of the car and followed him to the set of heavy double glass doors. I’ve always hated any time of doctor or medical center-they freak me out.

Logan could tell by the look on my face that I was uneasy and took my hand in his. For once the smallest gesture did not bring fear or pain, but the exact opposite- comfort. We walked over the check-in-desk and Logan stood in the window. “I’m here with my daughter Adelaide Evans,” he said.

The aid behind the counter started shuffling through papers that were in front of her. “Oh yes, Mr. Schmidt?”

“No, my name is Logan Henderson. I’m Kendall’s-” the woman cut him off.

“Partner? That’s alright; I’ll just need you to sign some things.” I couldn’t help but giggle a little. Inside my mind I saw a big light up sign that was flashing “Kogan!” behind my eyes. “Can you sit down with Ms. Adelaide and help her fill out this form please? Bring it back to me when you’re finished.”

“Of course,” Logan said taking a bunch of paperwork that was stuck to a pink clipboard from her. We went and sat in the back of the waiting room, because I wasn’t going to sit in the front or middle. I liked corners. “I think she’s the one that need’s a psychiatrist…” Logan muttered under his breath as he filled out required forms.

               “Kogan…” I said still laughing a bit.

               “Oh shut up,” he said.

“You know she probably wouldn’t have let you go through with it if she hadn’t assumed it. I’m all four of yours daughter but Kendall made the appointment. So when someone else brings me in saying they’re my parent, messy situation.”

“You’ve got a point there kiddo,” Logan said. Logan finished filling out the health care and things like that forms and then moved onto the initial ‘intake’ form. “Patient Name: Adelaide ‘Adele’ Evans,” He said aloud as he wrote my name down.

“Symptoms? Experiences? Do I have to?” I ask him as I look at the paper.

               “Yes.”

“Fine,” I said as I took the clipboard away from him. I wrote down things like ‘Can’t sleep, nightmares, flashbacks, mood swings’ because that was basically what was wrong with me. Then I started thinking and wrote down one last thing, ‘depression.’ I gave the clipboard back to Logan who looked it over but didn’t say a word about anything I’d written.

He got up and carried it over to the woman behind the check-in-desk and said, “Here you go ma’am.” He’s so southern, like no joke. The woman took the clipboard with a smile and said something to him, then he came back to sit with me.
