Chapter 11
I yawned and sat up, Saxon grunting in protest next to me and turned over roughly. I laughed and poked his shoulder. “Saxon, babe. Get up.” All that earned me was another grumble and the finger. I rolled my eyes and slid out of the bed before slowly walking around to his side. I leaned down next to his ear and captured it between my teeth, nibbling gently. He moaned and shifted, almost uncomfortably and trembled a bit.
His eyes fluttered open and landed on me as I pulled away. Saxon reached out and wrapped his arms around my waist before yanking me to him, causing me to fall onto him. He had healed greatly within the past three weeks, so he wasn’t hurting as badly as he had before. I let out a loud laugh and pushed at his chest. “I know your games, woman. I, Saxon Bishop Bennett, am NOT getting out of this bed until noon. I will smite thee.”
“Someone has been watching too much television…” I muttered, pulling away from him and walking to the closet. I pulled out a white sun dress and pulled it on over my head, sighing a bit before fishing out a pair of black flats. I turned to Saxon, who was still laying in the bed, with only the sheet draped across his hips. It took everything I had to keep myself from walking back to him and offering him my body. “Anyway, you are supposed to go with your father to pick out your tuxedo, considering that your parents talked us into getting married in less than three weeks. I mean, this is way more than I bargained for.” I muttered the last part, but he didn’t seem to notice.
Saxon cursed several times before throwing the sheet off of him and sitting up, swinging his legs over the side of the bed so that his feet rested on the floor. “God damn it. Was that today? I was hoping that was tomorrow, but of course…” He trailed off and stood up. He walked past me to the closet and his naked body brushed against mine, almost causing me to tremble with the restraint I used not to touch him. “So you have to go with my mother to get your dress today, right?”
“Unfortunately.” I murmured before I could stop myself. Saxon’s footsteps came to a halt and he turned to look at me with a raised eyebrow. I swallowed hard. “What? I am not exactly eager to get hitched, Saxon. Now, we have two weeks until you are stuck with me. I will be stuck with you… It’s just a huge mess.”
He just rolled his eyes and turned back to the closet, pulling out a pair of black jeans. “Yeah, well you know that you will be out of the marriage soon. So don’t get your fucking panties in a wad.” I almost flinched at the tone of his voice and shook my head a bit.
“Okay, what the hell is your problem? You know that I don’t actually want to marry you. So what is so wrong with me speaking my mind?” I asked, sliding my flats on and crossing my arms across my chest.
“You are my fucking problem, Scarlett!” He was going to say something else, but his mother knocked on the door and we both stiffened. I glared at him, swallowing hard and trying not to show the hurt that was pulsating within my chest. He sighed and ran a hand over his face. “Scar, I didn’t mean-”
I turned from him and walked to the bedroom door. “I know what you meant, Saxon.” I took a deep breath and opened the door, smiling at Carla. She looked a bit worried but simply grinned back at me. “Oh, are you ready to go, Carla?”
“Yes, darlin’. I am so excited about this! I don’t have a daughter that I can take dress shopping, so I am glad to have the chance to take you.” She gripped my wrist gently and led me down the hall towards the stairs. I sighed and let her drag me into what would be the most stressful shopping trip I had ever experienced.
“Yes! That is the one!” Carla clapped her hands and smiled brightly. I smiled back at her and looked down at the white dress, smoothing the material gently with shaking hands. It took me a moment before I would look into the mirror, and when I did, I almost despised the sight. I was dressed in white, but I knew that I didn’t deserve to look so… innocent. This wasn’t right. This was… just plain wrong. I blinked the tears away and turned my gaze back to Carla. “Saxon is lucky to have a woman like you that loves him, even though he is an ass. He deserves love.” She trailed off, thinking to herself.
I smiled a bit, beginning to feel even more guilty. “Of course. He is something else, Carla. I am the lucky one. I mean that.” I knew that I was lying to his face again, but I didn’t really care. I just had to get through this dress fitting.
“That mermaid style looks good on you, Scarlett. Truly.” She started coughing, clutching a dark handkerchief to her mouth as she squeezed her eyes shut. I watched, worriedly and shifted uncomfortably on my feet. She cleared her throat and smiled a bit. “Perhaps, we should purchase it and go get some lunch. Does that sound alright?”
I smiled at her gently and nodded. “That sounds wonderful. We can discuss wedding plans if you like.” I walked back into the changing stall and slid out of the dress, quickly returning it back to its hanger. I gently draped the white gauzy fabric across my arm and strolled out of the stall to where Carla was waiting on me. She took the dress from me carefully and walked to the counter, pulling out a sleek black card and paying.
She guided me out of the store and we walked in silence to the car. Carla popped open the trunk and very gingerly laid the dress out inside. She turned to me after shutting the trunk and tilted her head. “Would you like to just go to the bistro next door? It’s just right there and I figured that we could talk some more and plan this wedding.” I agreed and twisted the diamond ring on my left hand. It seemed heavier than what it should have been, but I knew that my mind was just playing tricks.
Moments later, the hostess had sat Carla and I at a table in the back corner where there were less people, per request of course. I ordered a water, and Carla ordered a sweet tea. Once the waitress left with our drink orders, I turned to Carla again with a strained smile on my face. “So the wedding is going to take place in The Gardens, right? Is that what we all agreed upon, or is the church still up for grabs as well?”
“Well, Saxon wants an indoor wedding, I believe. I would prefer to see you walk through The Gardens, surrounded by flowers and butterflies. It’s just a personal preference, but in the end it is your choice. Saxon said that you could be our tiebreaker.” She laughed a bit and smoothed her napkin across her lap. The laugh lines formed around her eyes and I genuinely smiled a bit. She seemed so happy.
I thought about it for a moment. “I think I would like to have an outdoor wedding, but perhaps we can compromise. If the budget permits, than perhaps we can get married on the far eastern side where the gazebo is. Do you think Saxon would like that?”
She smiled and clapped her hands gently. “Oh, you really are the one for my son. Always thinking about making him happy.” I chewed at my bottom lip and shrugged, blushing furiously.
A half an hour later, our food came and we began to dig in. I was thoroughly enjoying my meal, talking to carla about color schemes and decorations. I had begun to plan my vows and started getting cold feet. Halfway through my salad, the scent of Carla’s salmon hit my nose and I practically dry heaved. I folded my napkin and placed it on the table for quickly excusing myself and scurrying to the bathroom, just in time to get sick.
