Chapter 17
Ashley threw her arms around me and squeezed tight, almost shutting off my air and causing me to go a bit lightheaded. Squealing, she pulled away from me briefly to give me an enthusiastic grin. “I am so happy that you are finally getting married!” She mused, looking toward Saxon’s kitchen and waggling her eyebrows. “I can’t believe you never told me about him! He is so gorgeous, and rich.” The last part was added on as an afterthought, something that certainly did not sit well with me. Saxon was many things, but his heart of gold was more prominent than his wealth. I had learned that rather quickly.
“Yeah, I know. I should have told you sooner, but I was really debating whether or not I wanted to be with him forever.” I gave her my most convincing smile, but I wasn’t surprised when she gave me a pointed glare.
She smirked. “I think it’s something else. Something that you don’t want me to know.” I swallowed hard, opening my mouth to protest, but she just clapped her hands together and smiled brightly. “You’re pregnant, aren’t you? That’s why you are rushing this wedding! I mean, it’s almost a week and a half away. There is only one reason that you would rush it this badly.”
“Ashley, I-” I struggled for a handy lie that I could present in place of the truth, but of course, there was no lie. “His parents are dying and he wanted them to see his wedding before they finally passed away. Is that such a crime?” There. That was the truth, but not the entire truth.
She crossed her arms over her chest as Saxon walked past us to go get the rest of our things out of his car. “I don’t believe you. I think you are pregnant. And you are going to take a test for me later, whether you like it or not.”
“No!” I said, eyes widening slightly. “No. I don’t even want to think about it right now. I just want to get this damned wedding out of the way before I worry about my baby.” I realized that the words slipped past my lips before I could bite my tongue.
Ashley smiled even wider, as if it would split her face in half. “I knew it! There is nothing wrong with being a single mother, Scarlett. You don’t have to get married because of that little alien inside of you.” I scoffed at her and crossed my arms over my stomach.
“For your information, the wedding was being planned before I ever even found out I was pregnant. And I swear to god, if you tell anyone in the family, I will-”
“Kill me?” She finished for me, eyes hardening slightly. “I know. Besides, who would I tell? You are the only family I talk to, the only family I need.” She came forward and wrapped her arms around my waist tightly, causing me to wince a little. She chuckled and pulled away. “Do you know how far along you are?”
I shook my head. “No. Not yet. I should probably make an appointment for after the wedding, when the stress dies down. Do you know what I mean?” She smiled and nodded slowly.
“Of course I do. But I am heading out that night… I would really like to go to the appointment with you, if you don’t mind. I know that it would require you to make your appointment in the next week or so, but surely Saxon could pull some strings.” She turned as Saxon stormed into the room with my duffel bag in his hands.
