Chapter 20

Despite the way he felt about me, Saxon’s father walked me down the aisle, where Saxon stood tall, smiling at me. My heart skipped a few beats and my blood rushed to my head. I couldn’t hear anything but my own heartbeat, and I saw nothing but Saxon. Ignoring my sister, I took my place next to Saxon and mouthed ‘thank you’ to Victor. He just gave me a small smile, but the gesture brightened my day. Perhaps Victor was finally warming up to me, or at least I hoped so. I watched him as he took his seat next to Carla.

Swallowing hard, I turned to the preacher, my hand being crushed in Saxon’s larger one. I struggled to keep my heartbeat at a normal rate, feeling my stomach lurch with nerves. Could I go through with this? Oh, I wanted to. I really did, but I didn’t want it to happen like this. I loved Saxon. I truly loved him.

The preacher droned on, following the traditional script most commonly used in weddings. It was short and sweet. I recited my vows, which I had not written. I simply echoed the preacher, staring into Saxon’s eyes the entire time. What shocked me, was that he had written his own vows without ever telling me.

“Scarlett, when I first met you, I did not believe that I could ever fall in love with you. I just saw you as another mission, no, conquest. I was just going to love you and leave you, or at least use you to get what I wanted. But now, looking into your eyes, I know that my initial reaction was wrong. You are the most special person I have ever met. You love with everything that you are, and more. You conquer your problems head on and show no fear, even though I know you are afraid. There are so many other things that I want to say, but I do not even know how to begin. So I will settle with this…” He smiled and I felt my heart leap up into my throat. “From this moment on, I will love you like noone else can. I will trust you and be there for you. And I will fight for your until my last breath. You are the woman I was meant to be with, to have a family with. I love you, Scarlett.”

Tears spilled down my face. To those who looked at the two of of, it would seem that I was crying due to the happiness I was supposed to be feeling. But all I felt was misery. The words coming out of his mouth were nothing but lies. It was all one big lie, but I knew that was all it would ever be. Even with this baby growing inside of me, Saxon could never love me like I wanted him to.

The rest of the ceremony went by in a blur, and I couldn’t even comprehend what was being said, or even what my own body was doing. I felt like I wasn’t even there. I was in someone else’s body, someone else’s life. The thought stung, and I blinked away tears.

“By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you man and wife.” The preacher smiled at us, white teeth flashing. “You may now kiss the bride.”

Saxon leaned forward and quickly claimed my lips with his own, and my body traitorously gave into him. I kissed him back, my arms wrapped around his neck and my body smashed up against his. I didn’t care what our audience thought. I wanted this man so badly that I could feel the desire coiling tight in the pit of my stomach. I pulled away so that I could begin to calm myself, just in case I forgot where I was.

Saxon beamed at me and looked out to the crowd. This was where we were supposed to be starting forever… Instead, we were just starting right now. It was only a matter of time before all of this was ripped away from me.
