A whole new day had begun, I had spent the entire night looking through the book of shadows Destiny and I had found. My legs were crossed over one another, as I flipped through the pages skimming each and every passage. Destiny was right, there were tons of spells, rituals, and potions passed down for many generations. There was a chapter dedicated to herbs with drastic names. Capable of actually making the stereotype of the hooked nose witches. The ones who made a brew and wore pointed hats in fairy tales.
"Rebecca, you've been up all night in the same position. Looking through that old book. Page after page, over and over again." Layla's childish voice came through my room causing me to jump in alarm. She was standing at the edge of my bed, gave no fair warning of her presence. Coming out of thin air, causing the room temperature to drop.
Placing the book down beside me, I studied the young spirit.
"I-I know," I sighed in defeat, tracing my hand on the leather cover, "I'm trying to find stuff on what we're up against. Anything. The Order of the Dragon, the Witch Hunters, those weird creatures, the Caul, the Vargulf. Spivak." I listed off all the crazy fucked up things, I could think of, "I'm even trying to see if I can find symbols that could help me understand the visions, especially those sigils I saw in the one vision I had seen after holding the forearm of that sick Upir. Every detail counts. Big or small, I can't find anything. Of course, there are things on demons and spirits. It's useless." I gave a heavy sigh, leaning back, hitting my head off the bed frame. I gave a small rub on the back.
"Perhaps you're overthinking it all, and the answers are in there. They just are worded differently. Can't you go do normal teenage stuff, though? You have a life, live it."
I paused at Layla's words.
She was right, the poor girl was far too wise beyond her years, "I'll come up with something," I added before putting my nose back in the book. I was trying my best to avoid her question. I had begun to reread it all over again. She had rolled her eyes at me and then moved onto the bed so she too could look at the book with me. It was strange the feelings I felt to the young spirit. I would be destroyed if I lost her, she was like a little sister but was like a wise grandmother when she needed to be. Decent company around the house when I was left alone and the only thing I would love to do for her is send her on her way to light whenever shes ready.
"There's some Wards here. You could use it to seal the book away with it. Nothing could get its hands on it." she pointed out, but I had skipped past, "Rebecca, here." She caused the pages to flip back to the Wards.
"A protection spell to keep things hidden." I read the title out loud, licking my lips.
"Well, it's worth a shot. More so, worth doing when I put the book away. " I added, pulling the book back onto my lap, before flipping through the pages once more.
I had came across a chapter on werewolves. Layla and I looked to one another as our curiosity grew. It was bound to say something at the least. I placed my finger at the start of the paragraph, and began reading;
"Werewolves are a subspecies of humans who have the ability to shape-shift between human and wolf form. They transform and develop a wolf body inside their human body and it breaks out of their human body. The wolf that transforms back into a human will shed their wolf body and allow the human body that is inside their own wolf bodies to come out. There are only three ways for a human to become a werewolf. They must either be born one, bitten by one. Or in which case, choose to be one by drinking water out of a werewolves print. Werewolves can change whenever they choose to, though they should only do so when a full moon is in the sky, whether it is day or night. Their wolf is connected to the phases of the moon, with its peak form being when the moon is full as its body becomes fuller as the moon does. If they transform without a full moon, they risk becoming a mentally and physically unstable werewolf that is consumed by its condition until it dies from it. "
