I was in my usual work place at my dining room table when my mom walked out of the kitchen holding what looked like a pie box. She was smiling sweetly, too sweetly. She so wanted something.
Rolling my eyes playfully at her I sat my pencil down. "What do you need mom?"
"Who says I need anything? Maybe I just feel like smiling!"
This time I chuckled. My mom was always sweet, even when she was having to ground me, which was not very often. "Sure mom, but seriously what do you need?"
"Would you be a dear and take this over to Candice? She has been asking for one of my coconut pies for weeks. She has been having to work doubles at the hospital so I thought it was the least I could do."
I didn't really want to go over to Kyria's house, but my mom was right, Candice 'Kyria's mom' was really sweet. No matter how annoying her daughter was Candice was an amazing person.
Grinning and standing up I held out my hands to take the pie box from my mom. "I'll take it mom. No worries."
She kissed me hard on the cheek before she carefully handed me the pie box. "Thank you sweetheart."

It only took two pushes of the doorbell for Mrs. Austin to answer the door. She was a shorter more feminine version of Kyria. Whereas Kyria had short dark hair her mom had long blond. They had the same smile though; well when Kyria was not trying to be a cocky little shit that is.
"Amy! What brings you over this way sweetie?" Candice grinned from ear to ear.
It was easy for me to smile back. I dearly loved this woman. She was like my second mom.
I held out the pie box. "I came bearing gifts," I glanced down at the red and white box, "or more like delicious desserts from the Foster household."
Candice comically licked her lips as she took the box. "Please oh please tell me this is what I think it is...."
I laughed. "I can almost guarantee you that it is."
I was just going to say that I had to get back home when she asked me to please stay and have a piece of pie. I wanted to tell her that I needed to get back to my studies, but the hopeful look in her eyes I couldn't tell her no.
"I would love to Mrs. Austin."
"Lovely! Could you please go up and tell Kyria that she needs to come down and have a slice of this amazing creation your mom created."
Before I could tell her I didn't think that was a good idea she was already walking to the kitchen.
Oh God I did not want to go up to Kyria's room. When was the last time I had been in there? I had to think hard. I think it had been when Kyria and I had been around eleven and we had a sleepover at her house. We stayed up all night watching movies. I can remember one of our all time favorites 'The Prince's Bride.' I can remember how Kyria decided that night that she did not ever want to be the princess in distress; she wanted to be the prince that came to save the princess.
As a joke she had raced over to me wrapping her arms tightly around me while saying, "Never fear, your knight in shining armor is here!" I had laughed so hard I thought I would pee my pants. As acting out my part I looped my arms around her waist and said in my most girlish voice, "Oh my Prince please take me away!" We had fallen dramatically on her bedroom floor laughing hysterically, but when we had finally was able to stop she scooted over close to me before she had risen up on her elbows to look down at me.
