After dreaming up our future home in a kingdom of hedgehogs, Christian and I hurried back to the car. Snow had started falling again as we drove home. The apartment was toasty warm when we got back; which was a huge relief to our still cold fingers and toes. As soon as we were inside , Christian dropped his puffy jacket on the floor and ran to his room. I sighed and took off my jacket. I braced myself for tears and/or silence. Christian bolted from his room. His comforter and pillows were in his arms and nearly engulfed him. He dropped the bedding onto the floor and tore all the cushions and the pillows from the chairs and couch.

"What are you doing?" I asked as he fixed his hair and grabbed the edge of the coffee table, dragging it to the wall.

"What does it look like I'm doing? I'm gathering building materials and clearing the area for our castle." I raised an eyebrow but didn't question him. Instead, I went to the stove and put on a kettle. I peaked at Christian who was focusing intently on laying out his comforter and pillows perfectly. He ran to the closet and pulled out a huge stack of sheets and extra blankets. "Will you bring me those towers?"

"Uh..." I spun and saw Christian point to the bar stools. One by one I carried the stools to where Christian was building our "castle". He carefully placed them on the blankets and grabbed for a sheet. I helped a little by grabbing thick books from the book shelf to hold down the sheets but it was mostly Christian's work.

Soon, the fort was done. A patchwork of sheets stretched over the armchair and couch. All the couch cushions acted as walls and the sheets were duct taped to the wall above the TV and fireplace to include them in the fort. Christian ran back and forth between his room and the fort, dropping things through the skylight  in the top. "Hurry! Before the monsters come!"

"Just a second! I must save the tea!" I said.

"Right! Save the tea!" I hurried to the counted and pulled the teabags from the mugs. I moved cautiously so the scalding water didn't splash onto my hands. Christian peeked out of the fort to take the mugs. "Close the door too! The monsters will get us if you don't."

"Alright, alright! Calm down, sweetheart." I got down on my hands and knees and crawled into the fort. I changed my voice to a British accent, "Or should we call each other "love" considering we now live in England."

"Nah, I fail at British accents. Besides, Seattle is pretty great."

As it turns out, living in a castle made of couch cushions is a lot more fun then living in a real castle. Probably. If anything, it's a heck of a lot more cozy. Christian and I sat close to each other against the couch and watched a movie for a good portion of the afternoon. When it was over, we used the remaining afternoon light to read. We had to do some reconstruction and redesigning to  have a nice view of the windows and the now snow covered patio.

"Flip," I said, reaching the end of the page. Christian flipped the page of the book. I was a much slower reader than he was, but he didn't seem to mind.

"Isn't this book supposed to be sad?" Christian mumbled quietly, his head already tilted to look at the right page.

"Yeah. A lot of people say they cried..."

The book slammed shut. "No sad things allowed in the castle." Christian moved the pillow from the entrance and pushed the book out.

"Fine then. What should we do instead?"
