Life's Vast Timber
©2010, Olan L. Smith
Walking alone into the wood an owl swoops,
Then flees further into darkness deep...
I stop—my swaying lamp reveals a web;
It is one of many orb spiders―black and white;
I raise a broken twig to untie its labor,
Wrapping it around I gently lay it
To one side and in the morrow it will weave
Again a beautiful snare—I traverse
On in life's vast timber—I have no method—
Perhaps, further along the trace divides?
This time I'll journey further to the right.
