"What did you say?"
"I said, I love you. I love your laugh and your smile and almost-always greasy messed up hair and I love the way you actually make me feel like I'm important to someone. Even if it's someone I met at a nightclub not even two weeks ago. I love you Gerard and I want to be with you."
We sat in uncomfortable silence after that. Uncomfortable for her because she just admitted her love for me. Uncomfortable for me because there was someone who actually loved me for me. Uncomfortable for me because this was the girl that I was going to kill in ten minutes. Uncomfortable for me because I realized that maybe this was all a sick joke. Maybe she's just like everyone else that said they loved me.
I don't want to kill her. But I do. I need to. But I actually want to see if she loves me.
Maybe having her around won't be such a bad idea. There's always more like her.
"Hazel?"
"Yeah?"
"What's your full name?"
"Hazel Rose Lennon. Why?"
"Because, Hazel Rose Lennon," I said, facing her. "I love you too."
I kissed her under the tree. It was amazing. The only other person I kissed was Kristen.
Kristen.
"Gerard," Hazel asked, looking concerned. "Are you alright?"
"Yeah. I'm great actually. C'mon. Let's go."
I got up and extended my hand out to her. She grabbed it and started walking with me. "So why did we come down here," she asked.
"I wanted to tell you that I loved you too. But you did it first," I lied.
She laughed a little. "I'm sorry if I ruined your plan."
"No, you didn't ruin it. I was just going to tell you I love you under that tree."
We got in the car again and I drove to the nearest hotel I could find. We grabbed our bags and I went inside. The receptionist at the desk gave us a warming smile before asking, "What can I do for you two today? A one-bed room?"
"Yes, please," Hazel said, grabbing onto my hand again. I rubbed my thumb across her knuckles softly as the receptionist put stuff into the computer.
"One night or two?"
"Two," I answered. Hazel looked over at me, confusion written across her face.
"Two?" she mouthed questioningly. I nodded slightly.
"Okay, here is the key. The room is 23 and it's down the hall and on the left," she said, handing us the key.
"Thank you," Hazel said before we walked off. We got to the room and she asked, "Why two?"
"I want to see the city before we go back," I answered.
"And you have money for all of this?"
I nodded.
She went to the bed and laid down. I laid down next to her, propped myself up on my elbow, and looked at her. She mocked me by propping herself up on her elbow and facing me.
"What," she asked.
"What," I mocked. She flicked my forehead and I flicked her back. She flicked my chin and I kissed her. She kissed back and this time, it lasted longer than three seconds. We separated and she looked at me. "You're a great kisser," I complimented.
"So are you," she said.
We spent the rest of the day in the hotel room lying next to each other, kissing, flicking one another, and just enjoying the company. It was 7:30 when I changed out of my clothes. Hazel went into the bathroom to change out of hers. I crawled into bed and Hazel crawled in with me. I held her tight as I drifted into sleep.
I woke up on a hospital bed. I looked to my left and there was Hazel in a bed of her own. I looked at the huge clock on the wall and it read 3:00. I couldn't tell if it was morning or afternoon, but I was disrupted as a couple of nurses came in, pushing a cart with them. I looked on the cart and saw the worst thing.
Needles.
I tried to move, but I couldn't. "It won't hurt, Gerard. I promise," the blonde nurse said with a fake smile and the syringe gripped in her right hand.
"Hazel! Help," I cried out, trying to move but once again failing. "What are you doing," I asked the nurse in a panicked voice as she got close to my arm.
"We're drawing blood."
She pricked my arm and I watched in horror and the red liquid filled the tube. She soon moved over to Hazel's lifeless body.
"Hazel! Get up!"
She did nothing. The nurses took some of her blood and left. I looked at Hazel. She looked so peaceful yet so scared at the same time. But she looked like she was dead.
I still couldn't move so I shut my eyes. Next thing I know, Hazel is shaking me awake.
"Hazel. Thank God. I thought you were-"
She looked dead. Her skin was white, she had dark circles around her eyes, and her black hair was messy. She was in a black dress that stopped at the middle of her thigh. She has on black and white striped leggings on underneath with black Doc Martens on her feet.
"Hazel, what happened?"
"We need to get out."
"What?"
"I like you. We can get out. We don't have to stay inside this place," she said.
She held out her hand and suddenly, I could move again. I grabbed it and noticed I was in an all black suit. We ran, hand in hand, towards the entrance of the hospital. We got out and there was Frank's car. We got in and I started it up. We drove on a seemingly endless road. The sun was setting and Hazel looked at me. "I want to run away with you."
"What are you talking about?"
"I don't want to go back to Belleville. I want to stay with you."
"I can't just leave Belleville. Not yet. What about Ray and Mikey and Frank," I asked.
"I don't know. Never mind. It was a stupid idea."
"It's not stupid, Hazel. It's not. I do want to run away with you. I don't want this to end yet. Not now, not ever. I just know that one day, I have to leave you. I have to leave and go back to The Black City." I looked in her eyes. "I'm so sorry I tricked you in the beginning. It was the only way I could think of getting you to come with me. I was supposed to take you to The Black City. You were supposed to be happy there. Happier than you are here. But after spending time with you, I know now that you are happy. You don't need me to help you. I want to stay here, with you, as long as possible. But we have to go back to Belleville."
"I know, but I don't want to go back."
I looked at the road.
I glanced at her, then back at the road. "You really want to run off with me?"
She nodded. "Yeah. We'll go so far. As far as we can until we get caught. I just... I just can't stay in Belleville anymore. I was going to leave by myself but now, I have someone to go with me."
I smiled at her. "Then we'll leave. Where do you want to go?"
"California?"
"Then we'll go to California," I said, grabbing her hand and driving away from the town.
