Until the End

We walked to the car in silence. I unlocked the doors and we both got in. We drove in silence.

"I'm sorry, Hazel," I finally said.

"Yeah, right. That's what you said last time you flipped out."

"Look, I've never actually had someone say they loved me except for Kristen. You told me last night that you wanted to leave with me. At first I was kind of confused. But then I realized that since we both loved each other, it was okay. I want to run off with you because you want to. You said you wanted to last night in the car, remember?"

I kept glancing at her, waiting for a response.

"Wait hold on. I remember," she said after a minute.

I smiled. "Really?"

She smiled too. "Yeah, yeah. I want to go to California with you, Gerard."

"Seriously?"

She nodded. "And look. I'm sorry for calling you crazy. Really, I'm the crazy one for not remembering what happened last night."

"Oh. It's okay now. You still love me, right?"

"Oh yeah. Of course."

I smiled and grabbed her hand.

..... ..... ..... ..... .....

We have been driving for about three and a half hours now. We just passed a sign that read Columbus. We were in Ohio and have been for a while.

"The last time I was in Ohio, I was ten," Hazel informed me.

"I haven't been past Ohio so when we go into Indiana, it will be my first time."

"Be prepared for cornfields in the rural parts of the state. They're everywhere."

I laughed. "Okay."

..... ..... ..... ..... .....

We got into Indiana and when we reached the rural parts of town, I realized Hazel was right. Corn was everywhere. Hazel fell asleep but woke up when we just passed another town called Columbus. "How much longer are you gonna drive?" she asked.

"After we get out of Indiana. Then I'll stop at a hotel."

She closed her eyes and fell back asleep.

..... ..... ..... ..... .....

I lied. It was four hours since Hazel and I last spoke and I have been out of Indiana for a while. It was around 7:00, well actually it was around 6:00 because of the time zone difference. We were in Illinois. Marion to be exact. I kept driving east. I was afraid that Hazel would change her mind. That she'd freak out like she did this morning. That she would tell someone.

I didn't want her to. I wanted to get to California as soon as possible.

Maybe there she would see that she can finally be happy with me.

..... ..... ..... ..... .....

An hour and thirty minutes later, we cross the state border into Missouri and headed into Perryville. Hazel slowly opened her eyes. "Are we at the hotel?" she asked, stretching a bit.

"No, we're in Missouri."

"Missouri? What time is it?"

"7:39."

"Gerard you said you would stop at a hotel."

"I know, I just want to get to California."

"Please Gerard? I don't want you falling asleep while driving."
