I woke up to a very-alive-looking Hazel shaking me awake. "Hazel?"
"Hey, you said you wanted to see the city, right?"
"What are you talking about? Where are we," I asked.
"Gerard, are you okay?"
I looked at her, then at the room.
I was at the hotel again. That makes sense. We went back to the hotel to sleep, probably. I must not have remembered coming back.
"I'm great actually. I just have a question."
"Shoot," she said, sitting on the bed next to me. I sat up and ran a hand through my hair.
"Why were we at the hospital last night?"
"The hospital?"
"Yeah, we were in separate beds, remember? The nurses drew our blood and you weren't awake. I was scared Hazel. I was so scared."
"Gerard... I was... we weren't at the hospital last night. We came back from the park and laid down in bed and fell asleep."
I shook my head. "No. I know we were at the hospital. You said you liked me. You said we were going to run away. You said you wanted to go to California."
She shook her head. "No. I don't want to run away with you. I want to go back to Belleville."
"You lied?"
"What?"
I looked at her in anger. "You lied. God fucking dammit I knew this was going to happen. You lied. You don't like me. You used me."
"Gerard what are you talking about?"
"This happens all the time," I said, getting out of bed and grabbing my bags.
"What are you doing?"
"I'm going to die alone."
"Stop it! What are you talking about?"
I turned away from her and felt tears escape. "You don't love me," I whispered.
"Yes I do. I love you, Gerard. Trust me."
I turned around to face her after wiping away the stray tears. "If you love me, leave with me."
"I'm not going to California with you. I want to see the city, then go home."
Anger boiled up inside of me.
I laughed.
"You want to see The City? The Black City? Alright. Fine. I'm going to kill you."
She widened her eyes. "What?"
"I'm going to kill you. I was going to anyways."
"Why? Because I won't leave with you? Because you had a stupid dream in which I said I would run away with you and now you're holding that against me? You're crazy Gerard. You're fucking crazy."
"I am not! I am helping you! You're just so self-centered that you fail to see that!"
"I'm calling the police," she said, going for the phone. I grabbed her arm and pinned her up against the wall. "Let me go!"
"No!"
"Is this why you acted all weird the first night? Because you're crazy? Because you had someone fall into your little trap? Was this your plan? To drag me out here and kill me?"
"Yes! It was! I was sent here to help you! I was sent here to bring you to The Black City! And when you said you loved me, I couldn't kill you! I thought someone out there actually loved me for me! So I let you in and now look what happened! You're calling me crazy for wanting you to leave with me!"
"You basically kidnapped me!"
"I did not, Sweetheart. You trusted me. You agreed to go with me. This is your fault. All you. Don't you even dare blame this one on me."
She stayed silent, our faces only inches away.
"Now," I said, releasing her from the wall. "I'll give you two choices. You either leave with me for California or you can get murdered in this room. Either way, you're going with me. Your choice."
"Why can't I go back to Belleville?"
"That's not an option."
"Why?"
"You have ten seconds."
She sighed. "Fine. I'll go with you to California."
I smiled. "Great. Pack your bags." I turned around and grabbed mine. "And if you even think about telling anyone what we're doing, I'll kill you. I swear to God I will."
She walked slowly and grabbed her stuff. I watched as she bent down and slowly put a stray shirt and socks into her bag. This was not the girl I fell in love with. This girl was a liar. She used me.
I don't know why I just didn't kill her right then and there. Maybe it's because deep-down, the Hazel I love is there. I just need to know how to get her back.
